Last year, though, I did buy a small pumpkin and painted it, and bejeweled it with glitter and "rhinestones." It was awsome -- and I didn't have to get rid of it until the following March. :-D

Being a New Englander, pumpkins are not the biggest deal to me, and I've seen some totally amazing ones. I appreciate the talent of some of the pumpkin artists, but mostly, I prefer my pumpkins as pumpkin bread or pumpkin pie.

However, I'll never be able to look at a carved pumpkin without thinking of my honeymoon. We were in Hawaii, and the hotel made a big freaking deal about how they had flown pumpkins in from the mainland to exhibit their chefs' pumpkin carving arts. We went over to the display area, which was in a covered pergola on the grounds.

Oh. My. God. There's a reason that pumpkins are a New England thing. The tropical weather had made them all sqoodgy and rotten in a matter of hours. The fruit flies were flying in formation to get a chance to swarm around these disgusting things. The pumpkins really were scary and macabre, but not exactly for the reason that the hotel intended.

Ob. bead reference: My best friend has a unque way of displaying her little pumpkins. She bought one of those beaded macrame plant hangers and uses it to display a little pumpkin. It hangs from her front porch and looks so cute. The natural color beads nehance the appearance of the pumpkin, and the hanger doesn't interfere with the carving or the candle on Halloween night. Bonus: no one has ever made even the slightest attempt to steal her pumpkin and smash it on the ground.
