Are you doing the two stage technique?

The first stick run is a basting type stitch inside the final stitch run. When it is done you do your trimming of materials with appropriate sciccors.

The second stitch run is done outside the first stitch run and is usually a satin stitch that covers all your jagged edges.

The pause between stitches can be done with a colour or needle change (depending on home or commercial machine) and this makes the machine stop so you can remove the hoop and work on trimming without moving the material too much.

There may be many other ways to do this also.

YMMV
