New to it all...

Hey all...

I've just recently started to get interested in making glass beads for my wife to make in some of her Native American handcrafts.. we've picked up a few things here and there but are still a ways off from actually starting.

Here not that long ago, we picked up some stuff for my wife's sudden interest in silver smithing. One of these items was a Smith Little Torch

the basic box setup with the 7 tips. We asked the person webought it off of if it could be used for glass and she said that itcould not. Upon looking at the Smith website it references using itfor glass. I did some quick research on it and found a ton of peoplesaying you could not use it.. and then some that said they have beenusing it for quite some time and it works great. From what I gatheredI would have to purchase a warming tip for it in order to get a largerflame... but was wondering if anyone knew any more about using thesetorches for glass beads and the like? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Michael!

You probably would have better luck with these type of questions at the rec.crafts.beads group. The majority of the folks here are into stained glass construction and repair, some fused glass, and even less, hot glass work.

The rec.crafts.beads group are an extremely busy, incredibly warm (unless you are spamming!) bunch of folks that will be all over your questions!

Best of luck in your endeavors, Lori

Well, you probably could use that thing to make some beads but they sure wouldn't/couldn't be very big. At least get her a Hot Head for around $30-$50 and a cannister of Mapp gas and off she goes or get serious and get at least a Minor Burner with Oxygen/Propane set up.

Hi M, If the Smith Little torch uses acetylene then it might produce too much soot and dirty the glass. Here is a link that might be helpful.(or not).

Yes you can use this torch on glass, hell I can melt Pyrex with a match! You can hook it up to propane just as easy as any thing else. The problem is you will be very limited to the size of your masterpieces. You will find in a very short amount of time you will want/need a larger burner. But fear not as this torch will still have it's uses and will not be wasted.

Being that it requires gas/oxy you should already have your tanks hoses and regulators. So when you are ready for a larger burner you're good to go you just need the burner. Well maybe some hoses too. The hose on it are a little small!

Good luck and enjoy,

Thanks for the response Randy.. during the course of my search I found that of the ones that were using this torch, they purchased the "warming head" tip in order to produce a much larger flame... though it never was quite clear what "much larger" was. ;-)

I've got hoses out in my shop along with the regulators.. will have to check to see what I will need to put it all together though.

Thanks again.
