Ah-ee-da vs Ay-da

Can anyone tell me which is the correct pronunciation of the fabric forcrossstitch, and why? My dictionary says ah-ee-da is how to pronounceboth the opera and the female name. Is the fabric named for somethingelse? or is it named for someone's mother? Even if for someone's mother,that's still "the female name". Whuh? Thanks, Deirdre in Ca.

Thanks Darla--That a very interesting observation. Just because I'm a trivia buff and I found this to be one of the more sensible thoughts on the subject, I looked it up on DMC's international website and they do spell it with the accent mark.
