BAPs of artwork

I've become interested in patterns created from fine art portraits and other artwork and wondered if anyone could recommend websites that carry

such patterns? I've browsed through several already -- purchasing two from one supplier and have my heart set on one from another -- but I'd love to view and compare other sites that I may have missed. These are the websites I've looked at so far:

Artecy >

Heaven and Earth Designs >

The Stitch Shoppe >

Solaria Gallery >

Mystic Stitch >

Thanks kindly.

I've never stitched anything from the above mentioned charting companies, but I can give some guidelines for you to consider before you make your purchase.

1) How is the chart represented? Do you see a model (best case scenario) or at least a mock up of the way the piece will look stitched, or are they selling it to you using the original artwork only? If I'm spending my money on a chart, I want to have a very good idea exactly what the finished project will look like! I, personally, would like to see at least a portion of the chart actually stitched...maybe a 3" square just for comparison with the original artwork. 2) How many charts of artwork are they offering on their site? If the site has only been around for a few years, and is offering thousands of charts, it's not very likely that they have put a lot of work into making these charts easier to stitch. Charting software can produce a chart of any picture in mere seconds, but it takes hours if not weeks to turn that chart into something one would enjoy stitching. 3) How big is the finished piece? If the original artwork is, say 24" x 36" and detailed, you have to assume that a cross stitched version that has been made to fit into 8" x 10" is going to lose a lot of detail!

Good luck!

- closed for a few weeks I have received a pattern from Odds & Ins Online and was well pleased withthe pattern. It's stitching up quite nicely, though I've now decided toconvert to silks and redo it :-) HTH! Mellissa

If you are interested in this sort of stuff, I have an offer for you; for free, no cost to yourself. Find the particular picture you are interested in, somewhere on the web. Get it into your computer, and size it so that it is one pixel per stitch, at the size you want to stitch it. Look at it, and guess whether there is enough detail that you might want to do the stitching. Guess how many colors you want to reproduce it in, up to 90, and send me the picture as an *.tif or *.gif, together with how many colors you want. I can handle more than one set of colors, within reason. I will send you back the pattern as an *.pat file, which you can print out using Pattern Viewer by Pattern Maker, donwloaded for free from

Thanks to everyone for their great tips on sites to check out in my search for BAPs of fine artwork. I've got a great list of URLs to drool over and consider. I've also received some great advice on what to look for in a computer-generated pattern which will be most helpful. So far I've only invested $3 each for two patterns plus some inexpensive fabric, so if they don't turn out as well as I had hoped, I'm not really out of pocket too much. I've checked out some sites' stitcher's galleries which has been a great help as well. More than likely I will be making some minor adjustments to any pattern I do in order to cut down on any confetti stitching anyway.

Thanks again for the great help and tips -- I certainly appreciate the kindness!

Happy Stitching.

Cheers,
