I just ran across a very elegant piece of work. I don't even know if it would be classified as cross-stitch, nor do I know what this type of stitching would be called.
All of the stitches on the piece are exactly the same, BUT they are positioned facing different directions in different sections of the piece, but all the same direction to fill a particular color area.
Each BLOCK or GRID on a piece of Aida is stitched like this.
The top two holes I will number 1 and 2, and the bottom two holes 3 and 4 of a single BLOCK. In cross-stitch the floss would be placed between 1 and 4, and between 2 and 3 forming an X. But in this particular stitch the floss is placed on the blocks marked LL from 3 to 1, then from 3 to 2 and then from 3 to 4 forming like a little
1/4th of a sunburst.
In the completed work that I looked at, all of the brown floss was from corner LL of each block, as was one shade of green. Another shade of green used in a different place was stitched from the lower right corner or LR.
The only places where the same colors were not stitched in the same direction were on feature items on the image stitched. A drawer pull was stitched in a gold floss using all 4 directions so that the 4 Blocks that made up the drawer pull were stitched like a sunburst. The couple of blossoms that were in the image were also stitched as a full sunburst as well. But the majority of the piece, each color was only stitched in one of the four possible directions. LL, LR, UL, UR.
The shop that had it on display never paid that much attention to how it was stitched and did not know the name of the stitch. Just said that's the way the lady stitches her pieces.
I'm sure such a type or style of stitching must have a name.
