Mourning Samplers

So for those who skipped my intro note - is there anyone else out there interested in Mourning / Cemetery / Graveyard Samplers (or other types of works such as needlepoint, etc.)?

Although I've seen an article about mourning work, I don't really have a notion of what a mourning 'sampler' would be like. Care to elucidate? Dora

Hey Dora,

Here are a few links to info and pictures of Mourning Samplers. They were samplers created to commemorate the dead and often used the same types of symbols and icons seen on gravestones of the same periods.

Very interesting stuff, and quite a bit of variety in it.

When my Dad died I thought quite a bit about doing a crazy quilt piece, using pictures of him and some of the people in his life, but I never got around to it. It would have been more of a memorial than a mourning piece though. Dora

Sounds like a wonderful idea! I call the "Mourning Samplers" because that's an old term - but today they are called "Rememberance" pieces. I know it's been done with quilting. I like your idea: Celebrate the life, don't mark the death!

I got the idea from one of Judith Baker Montano's books. She has a couple of quilts featured in one of them which were a memorial to her father and to her godparents if I recollect. Dora

Gorgeous! I've copied the images to use in my gravestone art presentation!
