OT devastating news from vet--need a hug

My vet called tonight, totally astonished that an afterthought skin sample she took from my dog's foot while biopsying her ear for a possible immune syndome showed a "particularly ugly" form of cancer. My dear Emma, possibly the sweetest dog that ever lived, has maybe 4 months to live. It could be a lot less. Although Emma is 10 years old, which is old for a bigger dog (she is a collie/German shepherd cross, this is totally out of the blue, and I am broken hearted. Hug, and prayers, gratefully accepted.

Dawne, So sorry to hear the news about your dog. Over the last 35 years we've gone through a similar experience with four German Shepherds (Frank, Mickie, Sam and Wolfie). Giving an animal a quick, painless release from potential long-term suffering is one of the greatest gifts that we have the power to give but it's one of the most difficult of gifts to give. Oh Dawne! How truly devastating! We're never ready to lose them, but

10 is definitely too young.

Hugs and slurps and cuddles from me and Cash and Harry (and Aksamite, who still misses her cocker),

So sorry to hear that Dawne - love her to pieces. My darling Clancy is 13 and also a big dog and I'm dreading the day when she's no longer here - they are our kids. Give Emma a big hug for me.

Vic You have given me a smile, thank you. I'll explain--my old male cat Mikki was given 3 months to live--so I tearily vowed to give him whatever he likes, which includes cream cheese danishes and waffles with syrup, for those few months he had left. (you must understand, his diagnosis was diabetes.) 4 years later, at age 18, he is still here, a bag of bones, but ready to jump up on my dining table at the whiff of a toaster waffe. We now call him Not Dead Fred, from the Spamalot song. Dawne

Sorry to hear of your sad news Dawne - so very, very hard to hear that sort of thing. We just had to have one of our dogs put down a few weeks ago for a very nasty aggressive bone cancer in his leg. He had had surgery on the leg about 10 years ago and that apparently made it vulnerable and our vet said there really wasn't anything to do other than prolong his life for maybe a month - but it would have been time full of pain so we all agreed to make the hard decision. I'm hoping your dog will at least be pain free for as long as she remains with you. {{{{HUGS}}}} MelissaD

Please get a second opinion, preferably from a vet with lots of oncology experience. You never know - there might have been a mix-up in the samples or something. It can't hurt!

All my sympathy and lots of hugs - it's just not fair!

Dawne, I am so saddened for you! Just enjoy Emma while she still feels good. You will know when it is time to take her for her final journey. I don't know which one of you is closest to her , but when dear old Whisky had to go, I called a friend to drive Whisk and me to the vet, so the deed could be done. I just knew that JIm would be incapable of seeing to drive, or either cope.. It was tough, but that is what good friends are for.

Love and hugs
