English Coxes orange Pippins...........at least that is what I remember as a kid. I think the gala has a similar texture and sweetness.

This reminds me of my talky cat, Inky. He cries for almost anything (or talks) - he was walking down the hall making a very new noise to me. That's the sound he makes trying to meow while holding a mouse in his mouth...

What about Apple Hill? They have some interesting varieties up in the foothills including Arkansas Black and Northern Spy. My new favorites are Pink Lady and Honeycrisp.

Does anyone besides me like plain, old, ordinary, Macintosh apples, preferably from Upstate New York??? Sweet and tart and great.

I called all over Apple Hill and no one had ever even heard of them.

Then we went to Farmers Market and were talking to a very knowledgeable grower from the Natomas area. He knew what Macouns were and they would not do well in our climate, so discouraged me from buying a couple trees for my backyard. Considering what it was going to cost me to buy and ship a couple trees, it's much cheaper to just order the apples themselves.

One of the things I make for dessert is stewed apples; cooked in the microwave, and then frozen. I have tried many types, but Macs are by far the best, IMHO.

I like those better for cooking. My personal, haven't seen it in ages, favorite are Winesaps.

I read that cats can make many sounds, way more than dogs. I can't remember the actual numbers, but it was something like 9 to 49. I know Bucket makes some extraordinary ones and certainly can communicate.

If he hears someone approaching the door, he growls, loudly, very like a dog. He has a 'Ive just used my litter box' cry and a completely different one for 'I want to go out on the balcony'.

Did Inky eat the mouse ? Bucket always did, leaving just the tail and gall bladder tract.

I like Fuji apples, not quite as tart but the flesh is just a little softer than Granny Smith, they have a pretty, stripey red skin and just run with juice.

Inky ended up dropping the mouse which was retrieved by our other cat, Billy. We shut Billy and the mouse in the bathroom for a decent interval. He didn't eat the mouse which we were rather glad about, we were concerned about poison.

I'm a Granny Smith person myself. I got a bag of mixed apples at the store a week or so ago & DH and I both remembered why we don't like red apples, so they'll be going into an apple crisp instead of in his lunch box.

Anyone here tried Mutzus? We can only get them at the orchard about an hour away from us - very good eating apples!

Those are great fresh, not so good after a few months. Ginger Golds are good too.

I love loganberries too. They're not around so much anymore. :( We now have blueberries here and I think they've just taken their place.

I think loganberries are being forgotten here in Australia. Considering they are yummy, I think that's sad.

I like blueberries, but don't rave over them, in fact I find them rather tasteless. I think I sort of expect them to taste like blackcurrants, so they are disappointing. We rarely get black or red currants here, they do not seem to have perfected a variety that can take the winter cold. When I go to the UK I pig out on blackcurrants; we can buy Ribena here but the last time I looked, my Scottish blood did not allow me to buy it lol
