OT:-What do you have for Xmas dinner?

This year I'm fixing a ham (love ham - turkey is booorring) and just causual buffet lunch/dinner type food so we won't have to do a lot of cooking on Christmas Day. Will have a big pot of bean vegetable soup to go with it and cheddar biscuits, cherry-cranberry sauce, some sort of veggie (haven't looked through all my recipes yet) to start. Desserts will be at least one chocolate and one something else - apple? pumpkin cheesecake? not sure yet. Also baking a small brie in puff pastry for a snacky-appetizer as well.

And Sue...you will LOVE the Narnia movie. I had a vacation day on opening day and went to a matinee by myself - divine! Promised my son I'll take him next week so darn, I'll have to see it again. I'm also almost done re-reading the whole Chronicle series....had to explain to my kids this was what I read growing up because Harry Potter didn't exist {LOL}

Glad to see that, Melissa - saw a rather bad critique of it on TV last week. Mind you they always seem to get it wrong - we usually like the ones they hate and vice versa! Let us know what you think of it, Sue.

Will do. DD (the 22-y.o. one) has been awaiting it eagerly, checking the online trailers for the past six months. But the BBC one was a childhood favorite, one that she's enjoyed many, many times, so this new one will have some stiff competition!

BBC do the classical stories so beautifully - I`ve just seen the final instalment of Bleak House, and it was wonderful in every way. I loved their Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, too.

I`d love to see that strange fantasy film starring David Bowie again - blowed if I can remember the one-word title, though. (Nt a classic and maybe not BBC, but excellent anyway) Had a great hairy thing and a little girl in it. Ring a bell?

Sounds like Labrynth. David Bowie was the Goblin King, Jennifer Connelly a teenage girl who wished that the Goblin King would take her baby step-brother away and then changed her mind and rescued him back. The great hairy thing would be Bludo (or Bluto?). One of my favorites.

Finally decided on a menu here. We're going to have spiral-sliced ham (which I didn't get ordered in time from Honeybaked so I'll have to make it myself, at least they come pre-sliced in the grocery stores), mashed and candied sweet potatoes, corn, green bean casserole, rolls (possibly homemade if I can get things together in time), three different kinds of pie and probably a Jell-o mold. My sister is taking care of appetizers, so no idea what we'll have there.

Everyone is coming to my home about 3:00, with dinner targeted for 5:00. That'll give us time to settle in, play some party games (hopefully), and finish cooking, and plenty of cushion for my eternally late mother.

We may do presents before dinner, depending on how antsy the 8 year old is. I'd rather wait until after but I won't torture the poor kid more than necessary. LOL

We used to sneak in with pillowcases full of pressies for our three, to swap for the empty ones they`d hung on the end of the beds. They NEVER noticed that they`d usually changed colour (the pillowcases, not the kids - apart from the time one awoke with measles!).

Jane said they always tried to stay awake to catch us out but never managed it. At least we managed a bit of a lie-in on Christmas morning as the kids were happily occupied.

It`s those blue eyes - and the fact that my oldest grandson looks rather like him, only he`s shorter.

Pat P - off to check out Amazon for the DVD!

Bluto is the big hairy thing in Popeye! LOL!

I`ve been to Amazon and got the DVD! They only had two left! Hooray - hope it gets here soon.

What`s the betting that they show it on tv as soon as I have it myself!

Growing up, I think we had either turkey, roast beef or ham. The fact that I can't remember the food makes me wonder if it was the people with whom we were eating that was more important than the meal itself. :-)) Last year, DH & I drove from southern Oregon to Petaluma, CA to his sister's house & ended up having sanwiches form 7-11 for Christmas dinner. :-))) It was a 10 hour drive & she was not home (not a surprise, DH knew where the key was & she was home later that night). This year I think DH & I will take each other out for Christmas dinner. We really don't have the money to get each other gifts & we can enjoy a nice (relative term - we're easily satisfied) dinner at an "Apple Peddler" restauraunt for less than what it would cost to buy each other something that could be better spent on food or bills. We have each other, both are reasonably healthy, we have a good roof on 15 rural acres and loving family members only an email or phone call away. We have so much more than some other people have that it really doesn't matter what we have for dinner.

On the other hand, my sister (there are 4 of us) stood in line once for an hour or so so that we could have a roast goose for dinner. Other than the REALLY YUMMY roasted potatoes for which we all fought over the crunchy parts, I don't remember what the goose tasted like! It all goes back to what I said before, it was the being together and meeting the new brother in law (or having him meet us en masse) for the first time that was memorable. Liz from Humbug P.S. My EGA secret stitcher gave me a $25 gift certificate for Dutch Treat Needleworks in Livermore, CA for Christmas yesterday. Now to decide WHICH of the Christmas tabletoppers I'm going to spend it on TO KEEP FOR MYSELF! ! ! ! !
