Silk thread

I am just moving from DMC to silk. Can some one tell me about the merits of the most popular silks (au vers a soie, etc)?

Amongst many other positives, silk imparts a luminosity that cotton and linen threads cannot and do not.

Depending upon the type of silk you use (flat, twist, floss) and the manufacturer (Madeira is less fuzzy than soie d'alger), you can get almost any effect you want in a piece of embroidery.

The thing to do is experiment.

I prefer Eterna Mini Twist, for the price in the first place, but now it's mainly because of the smoothness and non, knotting/snagging quality of it.
