I could suggest buying him some power tools, golf clubs etc.... and make it an even exchange of self time.
We sit in rooms directly opposite each other - so we can see each other and YELL to each other. Correction - he`s deaf so he yells to me! If I want him to hear my reply I have to get up from stitching and go into HIS den. We started this because we usually hated what each other likes on TV (He likes things about machinery etc., I like mysteries - we both like history and travel so we DO get together sometimes.)
I sometimes have to shut the door, though, as, being deaf, he has the volume up so loud (AND the subtitles on!) that I can usually hear HIS sound above my programme!!!
When we both watch together I find the subtitles are so often so hilariously wrong that I miss out a lot on the programme, though!

I've noticed this, I'll put the subtitles on when someone is on the phone and turn the volume down. Usually I can still mostly hear it, just enough to see the differences between what is spoken vs what is captioned!

My husband and I watch the three channels in English on the TV (Discovery, Animal Planet, and National Geographic). The subtitles are mostly Norwegian, but there is occasionally some Danish and Swedish in there. There have been quite a few occasions when my husband busts out laughing in the middle of a show because the subtitles are so mangled. Either that, or the person doing the subtitles just gave up on trying to figure out the right word for something and just made up a word.
My favorite is when the titles are not only out of sync...they're for the wrong show.
I'm easily amused... Becky A
One reason why I won't go see a subtitled movie with someone who doesn't understand the original language. They get offended if I don't explain what's so funny, and I miss a couple minutes of dialogue if I do explain.
We sorta had that problem when we went to see LotR: Return of the King. The subtext for the Elvish dialogue was in Norwegian, and I was kinda peeved because I never got a translation for it.
So in retaliation, I ate his popcorn when he wasn't looking... Becky A
I love your idea of vengeance, Becky! LOLOL! Did he think he`d bought an extra small bag?
