Berkshire, Where?
I have never worked on restoration of ceramic pieces, but a gentleman who worked in our pottery did. He used a product that we use in the USA for repairing dents and holes in automobiles called Bondo to fill the gaps left after he glued (two-part epoxy) the parts together. The bondo can be sculpted to achieve the right texture and to replicate the detail of the piece. He sanded the Bondo smooth where necessary with very fine steel wool and then he mixed enamel paints to get a match for the color.
Time-consuming and tricky, but I saw him fix a broken bear figure with this technique. When he was done you couldn't tell it had been mended. This method, of course, is only good for decorative items. It would not be food safe.
