I am a fairly new potter and I have been thinking about trying to mix my own glazes from recipes. I was wondering if someone would recommend which type of scales you prefer-beam or digital. I will ask Santa for scales this year but I don't know that much about them. Thanks for your help, Sandi
Sandi: I like my triple beam balance. You can usually find them (new) on ebay for about $69 US . There is a "guy" (oldwillknott or greatscales.com) that advertises there that sells them. I bought one from him and am very happy with it. I try to stay away from the digital ones for the following reasons:
--They require power of some sort,
--Who knows if it needs calibrating...how do you tell, and how do you adjust it?
--Electronics don't particularly like dust and moisture...both are ingredients in glazes.
You'll probably be better off starting with the triple beam IMHO. Hope that helps, Wayne Seidl
A couple more reason to purchase a 3 beam scale:
1) Properly cared for, mechanical scales will last forever. Electronics eventually die. 2) A good 3 beam can weigh in 1/10th of gram up to 2.5+ kg. Electronic ones that can weigh in 1/10th typically can weigh only a few hundred grams. Electronic scales with higher weight capacities typically have less resolution. So, with electronic scales you may need two - one to measure colorants such as cobalt and another to measure major glaze ingredients like clays and feldspar.Do spring for the extra bucks and get a 3 beam with the extra tare beam. It makes life easier.
