Probably, you can use grill charcoal. What they use here is not briquettes, but it looks like wood. I don't think it would make too much difference.
Like I said, the Japanese kilns are not like ours. The elements are thick and are not damaged by the oxides. I don't think this method would protect coil type elements. People have coated new elements with ITC with some sucesss.
