A tale of 2 blankets

This is technically off-topic, as it is about sewn blankets, not quilts. Read at your own risk.

Fifteen years ago, I was gifted with 2 blankets - 2 layers of flannel, serged around the edges, in nice bright colors. DD#1 (who was born shortly afterwards) thought they were very nice baby blankets. DS came along a few years later, followed by Miss Fussy Rose, and then Spike and Giles. Those blankets got a lot of use! Crib blankets, floor covers, travel blankets... Instead of alternating use of blankets, with the twins they were in constant use. Spike decided hers made a fine cape and carry-along woobie.

Spike has loved hers to death. I was able to trim and re-serge the edge when the first rip occured. And then again, but now the blanket was significantly smaller. Then, one day, Spike woke up to find her beloved blanket ripped nearly in half! That must have been some dream!

Spike begged me to make her another, so off to JoAnn's we went. She picked out a blue/pink Strawberry Shortcake flannel, and I guided her towards a pink strawberry print flannel for the other side. Since with twins you can't do anything by ones, Giles also picked out some flannel. (She does not carry her blanket around, and wanted one bigger to stay on her bed. She chose a bright Picachu (SP?) print and a yellow backing)

I just finished Spike's blanket and wrapped it around her. She is delighted! What a simple pleasure to give a gift made and used with love.

I'm not terribly happy with the loopy edges on one side of Spike's blanket, so I will take it and the serger to the dealer next week to discover the problem, so Giles' blanket will have to wait a bit.

.Sounds like it might be a tension problem. When I serge fleece I use the scraps to get the tension just right. It still goofs up sometimes. HTH Barbara in SC sniped------

Im sure it is a tension problem. But I don't know how to fix it except by trial and error. I'll just take it to my very nice dealer and have them show me what to do so I know next time.
