A tale of heavy tools and old age

Since I picked up my new lathe, I decided it was time to reorganize my workshop to allow better use of all my tools (and to get the lathe out of the middle of the floor). This is the first time in 4 years that I have done more than minor changes.

Last year I had my right knee replaced and will probably have the other done in the next year, so even tho I am not really old, sometimes I feel like I am. And believe me, today was one of those day. Even tho all my cabinets and tools except the lathe and drill press are on wheels, there is still a lot to moving my jointer, TS, router table, planner, belt sander and drill press around. I spent about 3 hours moving stuff and cleaning up, then spent 2 hours trying to get my lower back, hips and knees to work again. And I still say I am going to do this full time when I retire in 6 years.

I am still not sure if it was the moving of the tools as much as it was cleaning in the cracks and crevices that I normally can't get to ot all the junk that I had to carry out to the garage to get ready for the trash. Or maybe a combination of the 2.

Getting old isn't so bad when you consider the alternative. We just make concessions as required. I replaced my old Craftsman drillpress this year with a Steel City which has a crank to raise and lower the table. It was getting a bit much to maneuver a large wet lump of wood around and still try to move the height, but if anyone knows where you can get retrofit kits for Craftsman drillpresses, I would probably go back.

Not sure when it set in that I was getting old. Maybe it was the bifocals, or the three days of stiffness after splitting wood when it used to be one, or maybe it was when a number of my patients on the ambulance who were younger than I began to increase. You're only really old when you find yourself looking at the obits every night.

I wasn't there yesterday.

They say old age is a wonderful thing, but don't believe em. I revamped my shop a bit this spring but I was making room for my car as I am getting a sectional door with an opener so I made up casters for most all my tools.

Thanks to an assortment of various injuries, I have a standing appointment with my chiropractor. Things have been getting better but they will never again be right.

But doesn't it feel great to have your shop clean again?

On Monday I'd rather make shavings than run the vacuum cleaner but on Tuesday I want to walk into a clean shop.
