hat sizing for a 6 year old

Hi, I am wondering if any of you have a handy 6 year old to quickly measure for me please. Unfortunately I can't lay my hands on a 6 year old at the moment. My niece is in the Uk while I am in France and her father is not answering the phone today. I really wanted to get on with making her the beret to go with the reversible dress I made today. I have found a babies hat sizing chart on the web, however they only go up to 36 months which they reckon as a head measurement of 52cms, I have measured my head which is 56 cms so would 54 cms be Ok do you think? She's not got a particularly over large head for her body size. I am using the wild ginger beret pattern which I like very much but have not made one for my niece before the previous ones were for newborns.

Claire, I happen to have out by the sewing machine a Little Vintage Jumper pattern with a hat included, since I've been working on a jumper & hat for my 10-year old DGD. It says: "For a 5-6 year old, the head size is 20.25 to 20.75 inches." Hope this helps. Emily

Oh Emily,

Thank you for being so fast. I have grabbed my trusty double sided Uk/European tape measure and 20.25 inches is 52 cms and 20.75inches is

53cms so I will make the executive decision to do a beret for a 53 cms head as the band is of non stretch fabric.

I have been planing this project in my mind for the last month, it's for a competition using recycled clothing. Yesterday DH went away to work for 3 weeks so I now have unlimited sewing time!!! Yeahh

The reversible dress was quite quick as I had it planned out but I have realised when I got halfway through that I hopefully have enough fabric to make a sleeveless gilet and beret to match. This is out of two pairs of trousers that are too small for me and a couple of cushion covers, an odd mix but the colours are great; cream jumbo cord & fawn wool mix for the trousers and the cushion covers are a fawn and petrol blue pattern and stripe combo. so far so good.

After this project I must get back to real sewing but I have a lot of cutting out to do first as I have no winter clothes prepared for my christmas markets, I am kind of trying to put off beginning, it will be ok when I start I know it's just this competition has me inspired so I have to do it.

Thank you so much. Claire in Montréal. FRANCE
