Chantelaine Pattern - Anyone?

I just know someone here can give me some good leads. I've been hankering for a Chatelaine ever since I saw a BEAUTY at my new local guild last month. (The wearer/maker has since moved, or I would have asked her.) I'm looking for a simple pattern, or even just common sense guidelines. How long (by personal height), how wide at the neck, how heavy, besides pockets and a scissor holder, what else is good to have on one? The beauty I saw had a combination of patchwork, ribbon appliqué and a cross-stitch patch for the guild label. The ends were more round, with a lovely gentle curve. I can handle the cross-stitch, and I suppose, if there are no "patterns", I could draft something up. Any suggestions, ideas, etc. Looking forward to your responses Lorraine in La Center

my goodness, Lorraine, i think you just started your own draft pattern. combine all those ideas and go from there. length, width, add-ons to suit you and your notions seems a good thing. ribbons could be used for spool of thread, easily changed by tying thru the spool or in a bow when not used. put a couple for light/dark thread perhaps. a wee pocket could hold needle threader or other small things. a pin cushion on it? hmmmmm, or make yourself a finger/wrist pincushion. what else, hmmm, a pocket to hold your thimble unless it has a hole thru it like those that fingernails fit thru, then a ribbon works there too. what else ya got for hand sewing? i have a pointy bamboo thingy for poking corners out, has a hole in it for another ribbon. i'd use various size ribbons for things you need some length on but still want them attached to the chatelaine. i'd quilt it for sure, just cuz. thin batting or maybe pellon or even a layer of flannel. just off the top of my noggin, lol. dont forget pix when you finish it....hurry, its your xmas prezzie to yourself. cheers, jeanne

picture the bottom half of two mens ties sewn narrow ends together worn round your neck, hanging down the front. on each 'tie' is various bits and pieces you use when doing hand sewing so you dont have to find a table to put them on. can be useful when in odd places but have a hand sewing project with you. hows that? cheers, jeanne

Funny you should mention that, Taria, since I made that one early in my quilting "career". I wore that thing out, though, and don't have it anymore. Now I have one by T.J.Lane; it holds my thimble and a needle threader/case, and I'm thinking that -- someday -- it may also hold a seam ripper. That's the extent of what it will hold, though. It's a small one, but lovely.

I bought a pattern for a chatelaine last summer. The lady who designed the pattern said that chatelaines were worn by mid-evil women! Wonder if those medieval ladies knew they were evil?

Not quite a chatelaine - - - - - - but I saw a wonderful thread spool holder that carries the reel of thread in a small loose "bag". When you are going to sew you thread all your needles onto the thread end and put them in the little needle book attached to the holder, then just pull the thread out with each needle as you need one. No having to stop and thread needles every few minutes.

My favourtie thread spool holder is about to be modified so I can use the same idea. It's great if you are travelling.

Thanks for the explanation Jeanne. I had never heard of one. Maybe if I did hand sewing I might have known :)
