Decorative quilting question

I'm planning to make a small shoulder bag from some scraps of faux suede, one colour. Was thinking about doing a decorative stitch over the seams and was wondering about doing it as the quilting or before layering, and if I stitched over the seams before layering, how would I quilt it?

Now that I write it out the answer seems obvious....

Now another question, should I try metallic thread, the suede colour is a dark grey, or should I stick to a shiny rayon type thread? I've not done any decorative sewing, apart from a little topstiching on garments.

Take a small piece of the fabric, Melinda, and try the rayon and the metallic. I'd love to see it with a metallic silver, on the dark grey; but I can't recommend your doing it without a test, as I have never sewn faux suede for anything like this. . In message , melinda writes

Thanks, if the rayon is close enough in colour to the silver would it be suitable to use in the bobin?

I'd stick with the rayon thread. The metallic can get fussy about different fabric textures. The rayon is more forgiving.

I was talking with my mum about it tonight and we came to the conclusion that it would probably be best to use the pieceing thread in the bobbin. Yes, the faux suede is a polyester I think I still have some of the thread I used for various things I've made out of this fabric... a full length lined cape, a vest, and a small drawstring bag. There's still enough in one piece to make the planned bag, but I've scraps of it to use up.

Thank you, I suspected that metallic thread could be fussy to work with. One of my aunts who lives near me has done a bit of quilting and embroidery, I might ask some questions there as well, maybe a different thread type might be more suitable than rayon.

I will share pictures... :-)

There are some nice poly topstitching threads that might work well for this too, and would be more sturdy than the rayon or metallic threads.

Melinda:

In my experience, rayon is NOT suitable for use in bobbin. By mistake, I loaded bobbins with rayon, which is what I was using on the top of the quilt. It was AWFUL! I quickly realized the mistake and switched back to the normal sewing thread for the bobbin. I still have the four bobbins of rayon, which I plan to use again on the top of a quilt sometime .... but since it is Hokie Orange, it might be awhile before it gets used up.

How about testing out use of two threads together on top? Use the metallic on one spindle and the rayon on the second spindle. Oh ... I like the idea of that!

That's an interesting idea, sort of end up with toned down shiny sparkle, maybe...

In the days when I was a lot braver, I made two suits with ultrasuede with lots of topstitching. I'll have to go with Patti's suggestion that you do practice pieces - and the most important choice will be the needle. You may have to try several before you find one that is "Ah, just right". Polly

I have Microtex needles, but I'll have to get some embroidery needles. I'll have to decide on which stitch I'll use for the decorative stitch as well. I don't really have a huge amount of fabric to play with though.
