fabric hunt (roadway)

Hi all -- I used to read rctq a lot way back when (when I had time to quilt). I'm on the hunt for an Easter basket filler, and thought I'd come to the experts. Can anyone recommend a favorite roadway fabric for my little fan of cars/buses/trains/fire engines? I'm looking for the type with roadways and trees that he can zoom his little cars around on. I may just fold it up and place it in the Easter basket for now, but if I have time I'll do a simple sandwich and light quilting to make a travel road mat. Thanks for any suggestions! Lynn

They have at least another that came up as 'Playmat'. Both found on their searc of the work 'roads'. I have made a few of this type of mat for little kids and they are always a mess of fun! I don't know if I remember you. Are you the cowboy hunting Lynn? Welcome back whichever Lynn you are. TAria

Yep. It was up with the cat prints and baby fabrics. And Lynn loved it. It's already in an envelope. I *am* going to get more space in here if it kills me.

Lynn,

Nice to see you back! I was just thinking of you the other day and wondering if you were reading the list.

TerriLee, let me help you make some space in your sewing area. I just happened to notice when I was admiring the embroidered baby quilt that you have a Xerox box beneath your table. Those boxes save me a lot of space because I 'distribute' them. In just an hour (or less) with just a yard of fabric (also, or less) you can arm yourself with a glue gun, cover the box and find it a home in another room. =) I have boxes with supplies that I don't need much of - fleece, flannel, felt, soft toy stuffing - that sort of thing - unobtrusively waiting to be needed but out of here. Borrowing a little floor space in another room helps a lot. My covered boxes have been serving that purpose well for more than 10 years so I'm sure they're worth their keep. It helps a lot if you have a grand piano to slide the boxes beneath. I know somebody who does that but I'm not telling. Polly

Oh, Miz Polly!! That's a cute idea. Wonder what my DH would think of coffee tables made of covered Xerox boxes? LOL And actually, I have a couple dozen of those boxes, full of various things. They are the support pillars for my cutting table!! Someday, I hope to have real cabinets to put under it, but for now, this works. Unless of course I want something out of one of those boxes!! ;-)

Poly, I don't bother with covered boxes. I use large baskets and let the pretty fabric contents bright the corner. My piano is only a baby grand so I can't hide as much under there as you do under your grand but it is amazing what one can fit into three extra large African baskets.

Baskets, oh my yessssss baskets! Just inside the door, there's a basket that right now displays purple. Batik purple, spotted purple, hand dyed purple, dim gray purple, regal majestic purple, purple plaid and purple stripes. I haven't exactly decided where I NEED an arrangement 'kitchen appropriate' in a basket but there are some grapes, strawberry and blue berries here. It could happen. There's even a basket on the bookcase/ secretary sort of thing that holds a poodle, Chihuahua, wolfhound and Doberman puppy to accompany crib quilts to be. Baskets are good. Polly
