Finished a xmas quilt...

My first free motion quilting. Although all I did was follow the outline of the people, animals and stars. I'm really proud of the quilting part. I have tried, and tried, and tried again to do free motion quilting and just could not seem to do it. All of sudden it just happened. And I used clear thread on top and regular black thread on back.

The binding however I am not proud of. It was folded over from the back. Needless to say this has never worked for me and I won't do it again. It probably took me twice as long as if I would have just cut the excess off and applied regular binding. Oh, well live and learn. It will still get hung up in the house at xmas. First link should take you right to it.

When I put on my binding, I sew it on the front, then turn it to the back. This way, the front always looks good and any oopsies are on the back.

Joanna, why don't you simply birth the two panels you've won? It's easy, fast and looks quite nice. Then you could enjoy your new skill of free-motion without the back-to-front battle. Your use of 'real' thread in the bobbin and invisible on top beckons to me. I think I'll just have to give that idea a test drive. Polly

Congratulations for finishing. I have that panel too but haven't done anything with it.

Oddly enough I can do a really nice wrapped binding folding from the back but I can't apply a regular binding without major problems. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I think that goes for all of the things we do in life. For instance, neither Mom nor I can sew a wearable piece of clothing alone, but together we can produce a stunning outfit because each of us is really good at different parts of the garment making process. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I used this same panel to make a wallhanging for the nursing home. I just did the birthing thing and some outline quilting around the figures. Once the piece was finished I added a little glitter paint to a few of the stars. I find these panels quick to make-up and gives the nursing home lobby a seasonal change. After two years of making them there is a different one for each month. So little effort and so much reward looking at the smiling faces as the people wheel past.

That is gorgeous, Joanna!! I'd hang it in my house, too. And I completely agree with you on the "fold the back to the front for binding" thing. It takes forever, just like you said, I never like the result I get.
