Flannel quilt backing

I searched the archives but could not find a good answer for this question:

My baby-sized quilt top is flannel, but I want to back it in regular cotton. Has anyone had success with that before? Also, I was prepared to use polyester batting, but now I'm worried about bearding. I plan to machine quilt in the ditch.

Thanks!

Hullo Jennifer. The 'mixture' should be fine. Folk make cotton tops and back them with flannel all the time! Can't see that the reverse would be any different. You might re-think your batting to cotton, for a baby quilt, because of the overheating potential with polyester? The cotton will also move less when being quilted. . In article , Jennifer writes

I'd go ahead with the cotton backing but personally I WILL NEVER USE POLY/COTTON BLENDS IN ANOTHER QUILT AS LONG AS I LIVE. (Said while holding left hand over heart and right hand in the air for all to witness).

I made a small crib quilt for my DS 12 years ago. When DD came along it went to her to use in the crib. Well here we are 12 years later...the cotton side looks perfect...good colour and the fabric is in great condition.... Now lets flip it over to the poly/cotton cheater front...the colour is faded so badly you can hardly see the pattern, the fabric has pilled and the fabric is so thread bare that you can see right through to the batting.

My daughter still loves and uses the quilt every night and has asked me to make another "exactly" like it, so she can give it to her babies when she is older. So this winter I will remake it for her.

I just wish I had known about such things when I first started quilting. My "first" quilt that I made over 20 years ago has also made its way to the garbage bin quite a few years ago. It was in the same condition as my daughters crib quilt.

So I have personally decided that I don't want to "remake" any more quilts. So nothing but cotton for me.
