free quilting software

has anyone come across anything helpful?

I'm not looking for anything all singing all dancing, literally just a drawing program where you could use a grid would work fine, particularly if you could resize and it worked in inches.

I've come up with a design that I want to colour in a couple of different ways to see which I prefer, I'm not the kind of person that likes to spend time drawing things out neatly, hence wanting to use a computer!

Usually I find there is something free out there, it's just hard to find!

I have a complete lack of inclincation to do that and I'm not sure I have a flat mirror..

I did find a couple of things, but found they wouldn't let me draw a block freehand, it had to be half or quarter square triangles on a grid. So I used MS Paint (the thing that always comes with windows), I'm pretty familiar with it as it's the only thing I have, so I can stretch it to it's limits, even so I was amazed how little time it took, I saved it under different names at various points, the individual block, the whole quilt uncoloured, then the two different coloured versions, it was probably 15 minutes maximum! At some point I'll post the two different versions on my blog and see which people prefer.

I also mocked up another quilt today, also in MS Paint, it took me a little longer, but was also something I wouldn't have been able to do in a free download or demo version as it had a circle.

It's surprising how little extra would make things a lot easier, but I'm not sure it's possible to add on to the MS Paint code, so I'd have to rewrite something like MS Paint from scratch, however that isn't as difficult as one might think, it's a long time since I've done it, but when I learnt and then taught computer programming, writing a simple drawing program was very early in curriculum, however, it would still take me a lot longer than the extra time it takes each time to just used MS Paint, even if I added the time up over a year or more!

I've used the Drawing Tools in MS Word quite often to draw out block designs. If you need help with that... email me privately.

Along those lines - sometimes (like around Halloween or Easter) you can find those little kaliedoscopes (without moving pieces inside). They've got a lens that has a lot of different angles - so you get (sort-of) repeats of the one thing you're looking at. TSWLTH has them in packages of 6 or so in the "Give-aways for kiddies dept." "Holograms" comes to mind. Not exact repeats, mind ya, but they'll give you an idea of how the block would look in multiples. ME-Judy
