Freemotion quilting in humid weather?

It's a beautiful 'soft' spring day here in MO. I love this weather, but..... my quilt sandwich feels like it's sticking to my sm bed and it's not moving nicely for me. It's not warm enough for the air conditioning to kick in and de-humidify the house and having the windows open is a wonderful treat for me so even if I lost my mind and bought a de-humidifier I would really miss the fresh air.

Has anybody got some tricks to make the sandwich slide more smoothly? I can't wait for the weather to change- I need this quilt done in less than two weeks. Yikes!

What is humidity? We don't do humid in the desert too much. There are a couple of houses available in the neighborhood if you are interested. I'm sorry, I really have no clue as to what would work for you.

Good job > It's a beautiful 'soft' spring day here in MO. I love this weather,

WhooooooooHoooooooooo for you. Can you wax your 'sliding' surface? I use a countertop wax to make my FM area so slick I'm expecting to have to put my foot up on the table to keep it from flying away from me. (We invented humidity.) If that doesn't work, turn on the ac and put on a sweatsuit. You do what you got to do. and more WhoooooHoooooo. So proud of you. Yes. So very proud. Polly

Wooo hoo is right!! Good for you Leslie! I have read where you can spray silicone on your SM bed/table for less drag.

An easy way is to rub the bed down with a dryer sheet. You can even use the non smelly ones if you are allergic.......

Learned that tip from a friend named Jill Schumacher who is an award winning machine quilter (DSM) and teacher.

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!! Good for you, Leslie! You can do it! As for the FM quilting, I've read that spray wax on your table will help a lot. I don't know, since "humidity" is a concept/word I had to look up in the dictionary. ;)

Free motion slider. it's made of silicone. like a plastic sheet. really slick! works great and not too expensive.

I was going to suggest that as well. I just bought the 'Supreme Slider' (a newer version) at my LQS - but haven't tried quilting yet. It's size does seem perfect for my Bernina table extension - no need to cut it.

When I googled for it, I came up with a link that also shows a silicone mat that is heat resistant and can be used for fusible appliqué as well. It is a bit bigger than the other. I suspect it would be great if you had a cabinet that lowers the machine to be even with the table.

I had the original "slider" which I loved - except for the fact that it had to be taped down. Blasted tape kept coming undone at the worst moments. So then I switched to the larger "sewslip" which you see at the link below. I really like how it doesn't need tape and I like the larger size since my machine extension is big. (I didn't realize that it was heat resistant too - that could come in handy). I see that the newest version of the "slider' also does away with tape.

Tape it down really well....I actually sewed it to the back of my quilt because mine wasn't! Mary

One thing that might help- if you have some waxed paper tear off a sheet and rub it over the machine and table where the fabric touches. When I was a kid we used to sit on a piece of waxed paper on the slide when it was sticky from humidity and/or sweaty kids, and after 2-3 trips down the slide it was smooth sliding again. Or- you could try furniture dusting spray wax- Pledge or that kind- not the oily kind like Liquid Gold. That seems to leave a slicker surface. I'd try the wax paper first, though. HTH Jane in NE Ohio- Might get to stop at Mary Jo's in Gastonia next week, The "Card" is all warmed up & ready to go! Yee-Hah!!

P.S. Congrats on 12 smoke-free days!
