VERY OT In electronics hell here!!!

Just wanted to let you know that I made the HUGE mistake of getting a

30 day free trial of McAfee. Finally got rid of that. Then we bought System Mechanics 7 Professional with virus protection and a firewall and downloaded it on my desktop and his laptop. Even a WORSE mistake there- altho I have had great luck with System Mechanics in the past. It has some serious problems.... the firewall won't work (customer service says there are critical updates, but I can't open it to download them!). So, I have no virus protection and no firewall, I lost all the messages in my inbox and most of my saved messages and a bunch of links and stuff (No, the go-back feature doesn't give them back to me), and I cannot restart or turn off my computer! I have to turn off the power strip to shut down. Every day something else seems to go wrong with this computer I have used for 3 years with no problems at all. I am afraid to email anybody with no "protection" and don't have the emails to respond to anyway. Hubby tried to send an email from his laptop and it was never received, so I tried sending it from my computer for him.... it's lost, too. If that weren't bad enough, I had a DirecTV receiver with Tivo which has gone bonkers- it keeps freezing up, won't change channels and shuts down the television. I had 84 quilt shows recorded to transfer to VCR tapes. They sent us a new receiver, but I don't want to hook it up until we figure out if the quilt shows are retrievable or not. Then the driver's door handle on my truck froze and when I "forced" it to open I think I broke something- it will only latch closed periodically. grrrrrr!!!!!

Woe is me... or I... or whatever. I HATE gadgets!!! Glad I have all those batiks to comfort me. VBG

So sorry to hear you are having problems. If you computer is 3 years old, I hate to say it, but it may be time for a new one (just a thought). Of course that doesn't always elminate the issues either. My computer crashed hard this past weekend and it is only 4 mo. old. Needless to say I was not a happy camper, but DH has gotten it back up and going.

I hope your troubles are not over and you can begin to get everthing fixed and working properly.

Bits of mine are more than five years old... The newest bit at least two years old... Oh, no! It had a new power supply and fan in October! I think it's a Frankenpooter! ;) Stable at the moment, but likely to lurch off screaming at odd moments.

Leslie, are you close enough to somewhere that you can hire an honest-to-goodness computer tech to come clean up/out and set everything right for you? Our tech appears to be about 12 years-old but he can buzz through computer agonies so fast it's dizzy-making. It cost us more than $200 to get real help but that was heaps cheaper than high blood pressure meds, bail bondsmen and napalm. The firewall/virus thing he installed is AVG 7.1 but it upgrades unsupervised- now up to 7.5. It plays nice with the old printer and tolerates the even older scanner. I think it's time for you to holler 'help' . Polly

I know lots of people that have had trouble with McAfee. We had it on our first computer, and had a few problems, but not many. The last 2 computers have had Norton, and we have not had any problems. We use the free version of Zone Alarm (Zone Labs) for our firewall, and have no problems with that. I agree with Polly that you need some computer help. If there is a Comp USA close to you, you might try them. I know all stores vary, but we have had excellent luck with the one close to us. Good luck with everything. My desktop and DH's laptop are slightly more than 3 years old, and we will probably get new ones this spring or summer. We have decided not to wait until they die completely because then you are without one until you can get the next one. Heaven forbid that we would not have a computer for several days, lol. Of course, it didn't bother us when we went to Europe for 30 days or on other trips for 2-3 weeks at a time. DH takes his laptop now whenever we travel. Almost all hotels have wireless now so we don't have any problems.

Hi Leslie,

I agree with Polly about AVG - great program. A techie is also a good way to go but I have to say, my DH is my techie.

A small amount of advice from my BIL who is an IT techie but lives 1000 ks away.

Whenever installing new programs make sure you disable the anti-virus program until installation is complete then active the anti-virus again. Sometimes there is conflict until both are on the computer.

Hope this helps you.

First off you may need to hire a geek to get your system straightend out. Then you may want to try this:

I am running it on ME ad it is fine.

You can also go to several online sites to get a free scan. That is time pricey but effective.

I can ask DH what we are using for a firewall if you like.

On the positive side...... That's THREE! And it only comes in threes right? That's what I been told over the years.

Sorry to hear about the gadget meltdown in your home but thank goodness its only gadgets right? (yeah I know that don't help you any but it was an attempt at the "look on the bright side" kinda deal)

If all else fails, kick something or go snuggle down in the stash and tell the world to go away for a couple hours, oh and take chocolate ;-)

Uninstall both of those programes with the add/remove programs if you can and install AVG. I am a tech geek too (networking mostly) and Ihave been using and reccomending this program for over 7 yrs now. I refuse to use McAfee after being infected with a virus while running it years ago and norton just plain and simple takes up too many resources.

Go to

and download the free version. Don't let the fact that it is free turn you off, that is all I have used for over 7 yrs and I have yet to have any problems.

Thanks, Tammy-- and Polly and Tutu, too! That's exactly what we both did until the wee hours of this morning. AVG seems to be working fine, but I can't get back the inbox and other things I lost. Oh well. Just to end the misery was worth losing a few things! Here's to AVG.... may it continue to do well by us!
