Go for the gold, thread that is

I have been working on some holiday shirt appliqué. I don't remember buying it but I had some Sulky Metallic in gold. It sewed up like a dream. I hadn't bothered to change my needle and this thread still didn't cause a fit. If you need any touches of gold in your work give this stuff a try. My spool is 1000 yds. so I need to find other places to add some dazzle! Taria

I love my 930 too !!! I just had it repaired...gd was sewing..hit her finger.. and Bernie stopped dead. When they repaired it...not only did they fix the basting stitch but now the needle stops in the down position !! The repairman I think might have felt sheepish when telling me about it but I told him that that was wonderful ! I was able to quilt a twin quilt on it without the annoyance of the needle ending in the up position. The next model after mine has the needle up thingy but now I love mine even more than ever !!!

The "needle-down" is awesome when you're free-motion quilting!!! When you have to turn a corner or move the fabric bundle around to go in a different direction, you don't get a big gap of thread if the fabric shifts... it WON'T shift! Great also for chain piecing! Doesn't waste thread!

Just press it once and the needle will go down into the fabric. After that when you take your foot off the foot pedal the needle will always stop in the down position.

If you then press it once again it will go up, and then always stop in the up position.

Apart from quilting (including straight-line-turn-corner-straight-line and SID, I like it for piecing pieces where you are going v e r y s l o w l y. When your eyes/arms need a break you can just take your foot off the pedal and the needle will stay in the down position and grip the seam until you start again (that is, if you originally set it to stay down!)

I have also used it when I wanted to do one stitch at a time, say in outline quilting where you are going to turn a corner in 1/4" and don't want the machine to stitch 1/2"!

I think I have a little light on mine to show when it is set to stop in the down position, but I can't check as its in the conservatory and the cats are asleep in there for the night. If I let them out I'll never get them back and I need a good nights sleep tonight - long day on my feet so weary. Bouncy cats at 4.00am not appreciated.

Can send you that page out of my instruction book if you need it, though mine's a 6500, but bet all Janomes up/downs are pretty much the same.

thanks for that info, Sally. seems the button is the 'lock' for where the needle stops when you stop sewing, either up or down. i hope that is still so on this ooollllllllllllld janome from mil. add to that the fact nz has machines have different model #s and probly likely the whole thing is up the shoot as to how things work...but i'll give it a try at anyrate. ta again, ennaej
