Can you just imagine that my sweet little mama wrote that on Every One of her Christmas cards one year? I don't know how long it took her but it tickled her just to pieces. Some folks 'got it' right away, most called to politely check and see if she'd just lost it. A precious memory. Thanks, Jeanne. Polly

I have wondered since kindergarten why the alphabet wasn't pronounced:

s t u v double v x y z. Any moron can easily see that the w is a double v and there's no u in it. Nobody's ever been able to explain that to me. Polly

I have seen V used as U in the inscriptions on buildings, some of which are in latin.

Polly, some foreign (to us) languages -- French pops to mind right away

-- do call it "double v". We English speakers do some things rather strangely. ;)

Okay, I've read all the replies, and I must be dense, because I'm not seeing it. Explanation please? :-)

Boy, thanks--I had no idea what she was trying to do. Makes sense now. Guess I'm really thick headed! Gen

LOL. This is not nearly as bad as the time I told the joke about the piñata and the bungee jumper. And don't ask. I don't remember the joke but I do remember that it didn't play very well with our British quilters. Polly

"Gen" Boy, thanks--I had no idea what she was trying to do. Makes sense now.

Yep, here in France W is double v, e sounds like ugh, i sounds like e, h is ash, g and j sound like each other and y is "i grec" (e grec in English!).

This is why I teach the alphabet to the children, before we get going with the English language at school.

Or mentioning that "gullible" is not in the dictionary, and waiting to see how many people are gullible enough to look and *still* not get it... ;-)

Ok, if you remember, you know where to send it... ;-)
