How to quilt Virginia Reel?

OK, I wrote before about this black and white Virginia Reel (Snail's trail, except I'm not sure it really is the same setting of those block?) with a hint of red.

Well, the blocks are all done and I'm ready to start putting them together, so it is time to start thinking some more about how to quilt this beast. With borders (2 white, 2 black) it will be about 60x40 (lying on it's side to hang on the wall over the sofa). The center of each reel is a 3" square (finished) just to give you an idea of size.

The only ones I've see online where I could see the quilting it looked like SITD. However, in 3 brief weeks last Summer when my parents visited from Denmark they took to the "the quilting makes the quilt" saying and it is for thei wall, so I don't think SITD would really work. And I don't want to leave it at that either, not for this one.

Right now I'm thinking I might do some circles. Some like rings in the water (several growing in size, same centre) and some just on their own, overlapping. Sizes generally large enough to go into both black and white parts of the quilt.

But what kind of colour thread would I pick for that? I want it to look quilted, but I don't want it to look like a fireworks of colour. When I had all the blocks laid out last night it looked a little stark, but I think that really fits this quilt, so I don't want to ruin that feel by adding too much colour.

Or do you have any other ideas for how to do the quilting?

I went yesterday to get backing and thread (not that the top is done. but I'm getting there). The backing is black with tiny little wines of white flowers and leaves - good for hiding the back of the quilting :-)

For thread I got Sulky Twist, one is black and silver (or white?) and the other one black and red. The black and silver is kind of fun, as it looks black on the white fabric and silver/white on the black fabric - I don't know if it will look like that when sewn also, this is just holding the thread over the fabric.

Then when I got home I looked in a book on decorative thread and it says to use rayon only for decoration not the main quilting. Oh S***, did I get this wrong already??? It is for a wall quilt, which will probably not be washed a whole lot (no kids, no smokers, no pets (sadly, he died)). I'm using warm and natural for the batting and not quilting really close. Do you all think I need to quilt with something stronger too?

Hullo Hanne I have not had things for really long; in terms of the experienced quilters here, but I have used Madeira rayon thread with no problem at all. I love the way it sparkles. I think the black, silver and red will look stunning. . In article , Hanne Gottliebsen writes

Hanne: Call the shop and ask! Nancy & Kathy both have lots of experience with threads. IMO, with the conditions you specify, this should work real well. I could be wrong. Can't wait to see this quilt. I still haven't even *started* my entry to the challenge!

Pat, I'm somewhat concerned about rising expectations here. I'm bad enough myself, I don't need a lot of help on that! I promised the quilt back at Christmas and have been stalling ever since, by now my parents think it will be another year. They've even put something else on the wall while they wait (that DC piece of milennium fabric I located by mailing here, professionally framed, looks cool, I might have to get that off of them at some point).

I am now officially in the challenge - I hope it doesn't matter that I started before signing up? Well, I can swap time with Pat, right :-)

And I'm loving the look of the thread, although I haven't started quilting with it yet, just laid it across the blocks done so far.
