Log cabin query

Ok, I've made a log cabin panel, 3squares x 3, if that makes sense. About a yard square. It is going to be a curtain in my toilet room.

I need to quilt it. I am putting in cotton wadding. I am thinking machine quilting, because of all the seams. Do I go round and round each block or is it easier to go diagonally across. I am here looking at it and don't know where to start, in the centre I know! Joking besides, anyone have a preference?

Thanks, for any ideas. Have thought of tying it aswell, but figure as it is going to be a curtain, then it needs to be sturdy, so it doesn't stretch too much!

Janner, it's all up to you. Personally, I'd prefer the diagonal stitching, as I think it would add interest. As for where to start, the best thing is to start with some very secure basting (pins, thread, spray, whatever you prefer). Then you can do your lines from one edge to the next, which means fewer thread ends to disguise. :)

If you're going to do straight (or gently curving) lines, a walking foot will also make a huge difference.

One of my very first quilts was a log cabin and it managed to turn out quite nicely despite my weird quilting. First, I quilted it in the ditch. Decided that wasn't enough so I also quilted it down the center of each log. We were going on a long trip so that last 'down the middle' stitching was done by hand. Everyone, including me, loves that old quilt so I'm guessing that anything you do will turn out just fine. Polly
