Machine needles for quilting Q.

Hi folks Just wondering what machine needle you use for machine quilting. Do you always use the 'quilting needle' or just use a fine point or standard one if you are not doing an extra special quilt? I try to use the quilting needle, but often times I only have standard or fine point ones and mostly, they seem adequate. Do you think it also depends on what batting you use?

Now, now, Bronnie. You've pretty much answered yourself. If you test and flip the test over and all is going well, whatever you're using is just fine. Some quilters prefer a larger needle, maybe a 90, but I don't like the big holes they make and don't use them unless the plain old green-band #70 is struggling. Polly

You really need to consider what size thread you are using. The finer the thread, the smaller the needle you can get away with, the fatter or fussier the thread, the bigger the needle you need. I like to use Aurifil a lot, the 50 wt size and so I too like the #70 sharps, as it leaves smaller holes.

Yes, I use #70 mostly, and I like the aurifil thread too. So, the quilt police won't be after me for not using the 'quilting' needle (which is, of course, more expensive). Phew. Bronnie

I think it was the man from Superior Threads on Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson's The Quilt Show who recommended Topstitch needles for quilting because of the big groove.

That's what I use now and it definitely helps especially with rayon threads. They are also reasonably easy to find.

I did find that when I used Warm and Natural I had more problems with thread shredding and I now only use Quilters Dream Cotton (except for my silk one and the wool one which I just stroke!)
