Machine Quilting Question

The chuppah project continues......

The finalized design will be an octagon, 8' across. Not surprisingly, I will not be able to quilt this on my regular machine. Because it won't receive much use/wear, I've considered tying it, but I can't say that idea holds much pleasure for me. Therefore, I am seriously considering paying to have it machine quilted. Which raises a couple of questions:

  1. Will the shape pose a problem? If so, will it pose enough of a problem that I'm likely to be charged extra?

  1. How much do you think I'm looking at spending? I don't want/need anything fancy--basic, large stippling will do just fine.

Any other words of wisdom you have to contribute will be welcome.

Make your backing rectangular (and trim it after quilting), and I'd be shocked if there were an extra charge because of the shape. I've done octagons, circles, triangles, and all kinds of odd shapes without a problem, as long as the backing is a rectangle.

Pricing is variable, depending on your area and the experience / quality of the quilter. If this is for a wedding, you may not have a lot of choice, as the better quilters are often booked up 6 months to a year out, and won't do rush work, especially for a new customer. As a rough guess, you should be looking in the $50-$75 range for this.

(And yes, this is very quiltable on a regular machine. I did several king size quilts on my home machine in my pre-longarm days. Just take lots of stretching breaks! *grin*)

I can't answer most of your questions, Marilyn, and I've only had one quilt professionally quilted. However, that one was about 95" x 105" and it cost me a whopping $200+ for an overall pattern -- nothing custom at all. I won't be having many (if any) more quilts done that way, even though the quilter did a lovely job. :S

Shoot - sounds like I need to move down to your area! :)

Come on down! :) Would I get a special RCTQ rate if I wanted another quilt done? ;)

Well, it would be less than $200, that's for sure! LOL

Hmmm... maybe if I charged that much, I wouldn't be booked up 6 months in advance. :)

If you have a machine that can do one motif of a certain pattern, you can do what I did on my t-shirt quilt. My Bernina 145 has this feature. I did a star motif in the corners of each block. It worked out really well and is holding up fine.
