Needing drawstring help

The days when we could search for a green-eyed 18" doll or Lego's that were all purple have long gone. Mostly, we give our children and grands cash. I had the brilliant plan to embroider their names on little drawstring bags to hold the money and use gold cords for the drawstrings - both to close them and to hang them on the Christmas tree. A fine red fleece for the bags? great. No edges to finish. Managed to hoop and embroider all the names with nary a bobble. Soaked all the pieces in cold water and removed all the stabilizer. No bleeding. No shrinking. But. Now what? I look at those rectangles and cannot for the life of me remember how it goes. If I stitch up the side seams and then hem, how do I thread the drawstrings through. OTOH, if I hem each end and then stitch the side seams, I still don't have an entry for the drawstrings. If I only had a brain. Help me? Polly

Maybe this will help. There are tons of others but most of the ones I looked at were too "wordy". Is this the style you want? If not, I will send one or more of the others.

Ah! Exactly what I needed, Rita. Thank you so very much . . . and I've marked that site as a Favorite. Lots of good stuff there. Polly

Since it is fleece and doesn't fray, I'd sew the side seam _almost_ to the top, then fold the top down and stitch the space for the drawstring. Since the sideseams don't go all the way up, there would be an opening either side for the cord to exit. You could even cut the top edge in some fancy way, or trim it, and fold it down on the outside.

This one does not answer your need at all (glad you liked the other one) but it could be useful if you want to make a career of sewing drawstring bags :-)

I didn't think I needed to know anything else about making a simple drawstring bag, but the Leetle Bag has a mind-bogglingly simple way of doing those drawstrings so they are neatly finished. I can't remember the times I've fiddled and struggled to get button-holed holes and just-turned-inward seams to keep tidy and in the right place. Thank you for that. Printed out for future reference.

There is a time when button-holed holes are needed, Nel. If you're making a bag for tent stakes or a cherished collection of marbles. Do little boys still play with marbles? Maybe not, but those bags see a lot of wear. The gift bags I'm making won't need to last more than the time it takes to remove the money . . . but my golly! they are just So cute. Fleece was a scathingly brilliant choice. The embroidery was easy-peasy and there's no ravels; none. Polly
