Needle brands - your opinions

Just curious about opinions on machine needles.

For some reason (don't know really why) I have been using only the Bernina needles from my dealer in my machine. Lately however, I have really been going through them much faster due to the nature of some of the types of fabrics I've been working with. I am thinking about using some less expensive Schmitz needles from JoAnns to help minimize my costs. I know there is going to be a wide variety in answers but I was wondering if any of you notice a significant difference in the quality/longevity of the more expensive needles vs. the economy brands? Any of you have strong brand loyalties?

Again I'm just curious and can't wait to read what you all have to say. Charlotte

My Janome dealer sells Schmetz needles exclusively- they were Bernina dealers, too, until recently. I have heard that Singer needles are an odd length and should be used only with Singer machines. I buy an assortment of Schmetzs- quilting, embroidery, topstitching, metallic and the super sharp ones I can't remember the name of. I buy sizes from 9 thru 16, but concentrate on sizes 11 and 12. Shop around on the internet for the best prices- they will vary wildly! I can't speak for the longevity of the needles- I am changing needles all the time. I can't keep track of which one is in the sm, so I change the needle for whatever I am sewing at that time- just in case. My sm is much happier when I use the correct type and size needle. ;-) HTH

I was told that the Bernina needles are made by Schmetz....

I use Singer needles in my vintage Singer machines but I don't sew on them as much as I used to since I got my Husqvarna's - and they get Schmitz. The Singer and other needles do not hold up to embroidery or =46MQ as well IMHO. I get the Schmitz in the 100-count box from JoAnns. I still haven't used up my box which is about 1-1/2yrs old...and I use my Husqvarna machines every day.

I only buy Schmetz, Charlotte. Like Leslie, I have a Janome and they suit it beautifully. I usually buy jeans needles now, and use them for everything. I will use 10, 11 and sometimes 12. . In message , Charlotte Hippen writes

I use both Schmetz and Bernina needles in my 2 Berninas. Both brands are sold by my Bernina dealer who only sells Bernina machines. I can't tell the difference in performance between the two. Go ahead and try a pkg of them and see if you come to the same conclusion. You won't hurt anything.

I recently splurged on some titanium needles, and my SM did not like them at all...... so, I'm back to using Schmetz. I've never had any problems with them, and I, like Leslie, swap my needles out quite often, depending on what I'm sewing.

I didn't even know about titanium needles. It makes sense as that is the current wonder metal in so many applications. I look at needles as consumable. I buy them by th 100's and swap them out often. Makes for easier sewing for me.

My machine gets a 'popping' sound to it when it wants a new needle. Took me a while to 'figure' that particular noise. Gets adifferent one when it wants a drop of oil in the bobbin area.

When I got the embroidery machine(s) I was looking on-line for embroidery supplies. I found I could buy Organ needles for about a dime apiece, which sounded like a good deal, as machine embroidery really eats up the needles. I've started using them in my other machines (older Bernina, Pfaff and newer Janome) and they work just fine for me. I can't tell the difference and neither can my machines, especially when I can afford to change the needles often.

I almost always use Schmetz needles. The only ones I absolutely do not ever use or recommend are the Dritz brand. And only use Singer needles in Singer machines, they are not the same length as the others. There are 2 other "brands" that are similar to Schmetz in quality, Klassé and Organ. Some people prefer one of them to another, in fact they are about the same quality wise. I do have some specially plated Organ needles that will fit my machine but haven't used them because they are a larger size than I generally use. I believe the "Bernina" needles are made by Organ, but I'm not positive.

That "popping" sound is the dull needle popping the fibers of your fabric. It means that you are long past time to change the needle. Common "wisdom" is that the needle should be changed every 8-12 hours of sewing. (There is some disagreement over exact length.) I remember someone who came into the store at one time and wanted to buy "a new needle" because the one she had broke. She had been using it for several years and only wanted to buy one at a time. sigh.

I only buy Schmetz. Pfaff is happy, I'm happy. Roberta in D
