New to Group and Glad I Found You

You should read the article you just referenced. Mars got the idea from seeing a similar candy; it does not specify "Smarties". Furthermore, BOTH candies are derivative of a French convection - Dragees - which date back centuries.

find no definitive evidence that Smarties were the first toincorporate chocolate - only that chocolate was used in dragees sincesometime in the 19th century, so once again, Britain has claimedorigination of something they very well may not have originated. Wemay never know.

Nevertheless, according to the article Allison cites, Mars was granted a patent on his coating, which implies origination of HIS VERSION of the chocolate covered dragee-type candy.

I don't really care; I buy 'em, I counted 'em, (ORIGINAL M&Ms, that is...) I eat 'em, and I like 'em. That's all that matters. OTOH, if one of the Anglophiles wants to send me some chocolate Smarties, I'll be more than happy to um... REVIEW them!

(Once again, I hope everyone realizes that I am arguing this entire discussion with tongue firmly implanted in cheek...)

You are actually from someplace foreign, like New Jersey or something aren't you? I thought every border brat not only knew that smarties were chocolate (because when we were kids they were cheaper than M&Ms), but could sing the "When you eat your Smarties" jingle.

Next you are going to tell me you never watched The Friendly Giant, or Tales from the Riverbank when you were small.

But of course...that's why it is such fun....VBG

HA! LOL! Nope, nope, and NOPE!! ...and nope. I couldn't even tell you what decade you're referring to. I've never considered Ra-cha-cha to be "border" and don't know anyone who does/has; we're a good 90 miles or so, and you need a roof antenna here to get Canadian stations (never had one)... The friendly giant sounds like something I might have *heard* of, but...

I caught the Red Green Show on PBS once (and that was enough!)

So there! (imagining Lizzy sticking out her tongue w/ that response) Myah!

A long-time favorite of the quilting crowd 'cause they "melt in your mouth, not your hand" as the U.S. M's say.

I read that they put in more brown M's so the bright colors showed up better, like little jewels.

Cadbury has brought these back for "The Holidays":

They come in red & green pkgs, too, w/ some other name (Hershey's):

Well gee, now that you have, er had, or is it almost had? the ferry I thought y'all were an official border crossing.

Where and when I grew up the only way you got _any_ TV stations was with a roof antenna. CHCH from Hamilton always had the best signal, followed by the Buffalo stations. About half the time we got Global network 6 from somewhere in Canada, and once in a blue moon when the wind was right and the aliens didn't cause interference we got a couple of canadian UHF channels. When Erie PA got TV stations that actually broadcast beyond their city limits we were really stylin, SEVEN (count 'em, 7!) reliable TV stations with a heave of the rotor dial and the grr-ow-grrr-ow-grrr-ow of the rotor motor. Then the PBS station in Buffalo got a repeater network set up, and that made 8 whole channels! Hoo!

NightMist The Friendly Giant played the recorder and had a chicken >HA! LOL! Nope, nope, and NOPE!! ...and nope.

[sadly shaking head...] Please... don't even go there. I was a lone voice of sanity in the wilderness when that fiasco was still some politician's wetdream, and everything I cautioned/predicted came to pass. Proof is in Usenet's archives.

*pats Doc on the head*

It's OK lil' buckaroo. I myself thought it was a nifty idea, but wildly impractical all things considered. I have yet to meet a single soul that thought it was a good investment at any point of the process.
