online source for wide fabric

I've decided to make a large mariner's compass quilt, I'd like to use a plain background and the size would require seams if I used regular

40inch fabric. Does anyone know a place online that has a good selection? I'm thinking of plain or marbled cream, though I tend to take inspiration from the fabric on offer, so this could change.

I saw several recently - believe they were over at

The prices were rather low which may or may not be an indicator of their quality. Anne, it might be a good idea to order the smallest bit you could to actually inspect the fabric before committing to such a big project. IMHO, of course. Polly

That was why I was hoping to find a store someone had used before, or maybe a reputable manufacturer that I could find a seller of.

I just googled the words: fabric wide backing and got pages and pages of links.... These were just the first few! I'm sure you'll be able to find what you need.

I've bought from them before and have been happy with their service (NAYY), and it looks like they have what you're looking for.

You might want to watch out for the word 'sateen' in the description of the wide fabrics. Just a personal thing perhaps but that stuff is very pretty

*and* a little slippery. When I'm piecing, I don't want any fabrics making travel plans without discussing it with me. Polly

Fabric.com and Keepsake Quilting have 60" wide fabric. I have ordered from both of them, and have been very happy with them.

Fabric Depot, in Portland, OR has a number of wide fabrics, from plain muslin to prints -- all I've fondled have been on good quality greige goods, and up to 120" wide. Some here:

They also carry quite a few 60" plain cottons, including Kona.

If you don't see what you want, ask... they may have it. Most of their stuff isn't on the web -- the store is 1.66 acres. And you have to sew to work the floor there. snipped-for-privacy@fabricdepot.com

Pricing is a little strange... actual price is 70% of listed price.

Do you have a shop nearby that sells curtain fabric? Lots of it comes in extra-wide medium-weight cotton, and you can feel it before buying. Roberta in D

) and it's very nice ANd they have a bunch that is on sale for $8.95/yd. I believe someone else has recommended Christian Lane (don't know the e-addy, sorry) and I have also gotten fabric from them which was lovely. TSWLTH (aka Joanns) also offers a few different tone on tone 90" or

108" wide fabrics. I bought some when it was on sale and it's fairly nice.
