OT-future long distance visiting and/or quilt shows (just to keep this on topic somewhat)

When we flew back from Vegas last week, I was chosen for further scrutiny. they swabbed my flip flops and when they inserted the swab into the machine, the bells went off and the guy said, "We have a winner!" I said,"Why couldn't I have heard that phrase in the casino!". It was all fine, they just re-xrayed them. I was patted down, and my bags were gone through too. I must give them credit, it was done in a friendly but professional manner. Still I did not like the patdown. I must fly to NY this weekend for my 35th HS reunion. After that I am staying home.

You were here and didn't tell me, Linda? :O Of course, I had two of my DGSs most of the week, so a meet-up might have been complicated.... ;)

Yes, you can now take just one smallish bag as hand luggage, but no liquids. A laptop counts as the single bag. Still very thorough searches.

Personally I would rather have the restrictions and stay safe, rather than be blown to smitherines, especially as DSIL is an airline pilot and so has no choice when and where he flies.

nzlstsar** if you're renting a car, ask for one with GPS direction finder gizmo - it will show you the exact route to follow to get to wherever you are going.

Yes they are wonderful - we got one just before we went to France. It even told us which way to go round a roundabout! (and I didn't have to even get a map out!)

DH, however, sometimes likes to do his own thing, and the 'lady in the sky' got quite upset and kept saying 'Turn around at the next opportunity'. I kept expecting her to say 'Please, please turn around', and burst into tears!

Apparently you can now get them with famous peoples' voices - the mind boggles!

an excellent suggestion, cathy. i'm mostly worried about what seemed to me last yr as an excessive amount of highway construction necessitating detours etc. it was totally confusing to someone not at all familiar with the area. i did a map check today and seems like from detroit airport up to london is about 120miles/200km-ish. assuming i can drive at 55mph/100km then two hrs of drive time plus another hr for good measure each way ought to do it. i'll hopefully only need an hr or less there unless i consider stopping at lens mill for fabric, if i can find it that is, lol. then back to detroit. i'd love a personal navigator tho. anyone interested in a day trip to london. :)

i'm gonna play it by ear after i return to detroit airport. with the current situation re carry on stuff, i'll have to bus and/or train around the usa (stopping here, there, anywhere, lol) most likely til i get back to the west-coast for return flight from los angeles to nz. then i'll be begging them to understand that i have to carry this as its antique, glass and extremely fragile. i can not put it thru luggage. they wouldnt cover any damage on it that way either cuz of what it is. if they wont let me carry it, i will have to cancel my return flight and live at LAX til i figure out what else to do. i wonder when i'll actually get home...in time for xmas, hmmmm. cheers, jeanne

When are you planning this trip? Gen

hi Gen, the plan was/is? to go thru the san francisco bay area, one day for business(hopefully that is enough) and one day to see the PIQF. i think that is end of sept. then fly on from SF to Detroit, get a car, drive up to london and return the same day. then due to new flying restrictions i'll probably have to bus or train round the usa til i get back to the west coast (LA or SF) and fly home, begging them to allow me to carry my precious vase onboard. oh dear, it is a worry. wanna navigate for me? cheers, jeanne

Possibly. contact me privately when the plans are a little more definite. I'll be up in MI the 29th for the big sewing expo there. If you plan it right, we could do that then go to London the next day. If that works, you wouldn't have to rent a car--I'll have mine. Gen

Are you referring to the sewing expo in NOVI Mi? That is only about 15 miles from my home. julia

I would love to go but I don't drive so getting places is a challenge. Heck we don't even have public transportation out our way. Let me do a bit of checking maybe I can find a way. julia
