OT-future long distance visiting and/or quilt shows (just to keep this on topic somewhat)

I heard tonight that if you are flying out of England, you can't even bring any reading material, in case you have secreted something in the pages. They were showing film of the garbage at the San Francisco airport & lots of people had to throw away the California wines they had purchased to take home. Some people were complaining about the extra precautions - hey, I don't mind being a tad inconvenienced if it is to save the lives of many. I don't expect to see an end to this in my lifetime - isn't it sad that we can't all just agree to disagree & live happily!!

Sorry for my ignorance! VBG We only subscribe to our local small town newspaper- population 10, 000. There's not much *big* news in it. It's mostly just local stuff and only 8-12 pages of it at that. I don't watch the news on television. It just upsets me with all the murders and crooked politicians and natural disasters and wars and awful things going on in the world. I find I'm better off in my little world of ignorant bliss with my flowers, quilting and The HairyButt Gang. :-/

I guess I'll stick to driving when I need to go somewhere. By the time we drive 4 hrs. to the airport, get there several hours early, try to find a parking space, wait for late flights, missed connections and layovers, and misplaced luggage, it's often quicker (and *always* more comfortable) to drive!

I've always wondered why someone doesn't start a "good news" television news broadcast with all uplifting, happy stories. Now, I'd watch that.....

What really made me laugh when we travelled a few years back was that the x-ray person got all het up and had a hissy fit over six batteries I had loose in my carry on bag. yet she completely ignored the needles and syringes ( I am insulin-dependent). Go figure - I could have done a lot more damage with the needles that with an iddy-biddy battery!!!

Yeuch! have they tasted baby formula? I'd rather chuck it out and buy more than drink it!!!

But unless your airline carries baby formula for sale on the flight, your baby would go hungry until you are at your destination! This is only about bringing onboard enough for the flight.

I'm travelling next week and fretting big time about checking my laptop in. But I have to bring it...

This morning on the news over here they are saying that eg books bought airside can be brought onto the plane. But I have been saving the last Elm Creek novel I bought for the flight :-(

well they do have the dry version - anyway.. I never made up formula till I needed it

I deleted my opinion on this.

The airlines carry powdered baby milk? Huh, I never knew that. Of course, I never needed to know :-)

err no I carried the powdered version lol

*however* they do have sealed ready to use packets of baby food so technically the airlines should be able to supply the baby food.

wow, that is close. then you could tell me how long is the drive from the airport up to London, Ontario. considering i've never lived anywhere near there. spent 6 weeks in london and a couple of weeks in Ypsilanti on the last trip. seems to me the roads/freeways had a lot of detours and roadworks then too. eeeeeeeek. how hard it is to find my way from the airport across the border and up to London. i'll need to make the round trip all in the one day with hopefully less than an hour there unless the LenMills shop is easy to find of course for a wee bit of s.e.x. :) well heck it did have some amazing bargains there. but the main purpose is to get my vase and return the car asap. then i gotta figure out how to continue my trip to where ever if i can carry my vase on a plane. oh geez, this saga just goes on and on and on and on, eh. cheers from a cold winter night and i'm off to bed soon, jeanne

This past May, my flight from Florida to NY was diverted to Albany because of bad weather. We were circling for a time. The airline not only ran out of food and beverages, they ran out of potable water. We were only in the air an extra 90 minutes. We were lucky we'd brought bottled water on. Now you can't do that.

Ummm...that's to be expected in Michigan --- we often joke that we have only two seasons: Winter and Construction. *smirk*

eeeeeeeek. how

Finding the border shouldn't be hard in general -- that will require a trip downtown Det. and then a choice at the border of tunnel or bridge

-- lots of signs IIRC. Not that we don't want you in the STates but why aren't you just flying into Canada?

and ya never told me?? oh well, maybe next time, eh. where are you then?

yea i noticed that, i was there in early june and i melted the whole time. we dont get those temps here in auckland, i'd never cope if they did.

not hard? for someone who has no idea what direction any of the freeways end up so if i take the wrong turn i'm in big trouble. would take me ages to find my way back to the right roads. uh, not sure i want to be lost in downtown detroit either. all that construction last time had me confused and i wasnt driving. last trip i flew from Calif thru Toronto into London, the cost was ridiculous by crossing the border, therefore int'l flight. has to be less pricey(even with cost of a car/fuel etc) by flying into Detroit and driving up to London, its only for one purpose. last trip i knew no better and it was a long visit. in all it took me 6 weeks last time. eeeeeeeek. this time all i really need is the one stop at the auction house to get my vase, then home again home again, jiggity jig, lol. well back to detroit and i'll figure out then where i'm headed. i honestly at this point only have one person who has a bed waiting for me in eastern west virginia. i'm thinking if i time this right i can see PIQF in calif, late sept, then go thru Houston in late Oct. filling in the weeks between i'm unsure of as yet. might well stop thru AZ on the way home from Houston for a bit. that too depends. i'm clueless and planless at this point, lol. sigh... another fun/unknown trip ahead of me. now the latest problem is the amount of carry on we're allowed on flights. i could not ship the vase home cuz no one will insure antique glass items and the auction house also 'wont be responsible' for the packing of it, those are their words. they can sell it and cant ship it, all i can do is fly back and get it myself. i might well end up on buses/trains and swimming back to nz to get the vase home. :( this all started way back in oct 2004 when mom passed away and i'm still trying to get it all sorted out the best i can cuz mom expected me to do it. i just hope i survive long enough...i have my doubts some days. the saga continues. cheers from a nice sunny winter day in the south pacific, jeanne

Somehow I just can't see that the ban on everything carried on will last. Can you imagine a plane load of grumpy, bored (and more than likely hungry and thirsty) travelers and one crying, hungry baby. The airlines won't have to worry about terrorists, the passengers will be the threat.

OTH, maybe airlines will have to start food service again.

apparently the UK flights are having some of the restrictions eased.. and about time too!

The latest trend is for the airline to sell you food. Perhaps they don't have much of an incentive to let you bring anything aboard. ;-)
