OT: Getting to Know Each Other - Holiday Edition!

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Egg Nog -- I can get hot chocolate any time of the year but egg nog is only available during the holidays.
  2. Does Santa wrap presents or set under tree? For kids, Santas gifts are under the tree and not wrapped. For grownups and big kids, Santas gifts are wrapped and under the tree.
  3. Colored lights on tree/house? Colored on the fresh cut tree. White on both the artificial white tree and the artificial green Garfield Cat tree. The outside has both colored and white lights -- lots and lots of lights. The family decorating motto is: IF it stand still, it gets decorated" :-)!
  4. Hang mistletoe? I have phony mistletoe attached to the Moose Mistletoe Holder that hangs in the entry. I also usually buy some fresh from the Boy Scouts who stand outside the grocery store selling it.
  5. When do you put up decorations? Outside light are put up Thanksgiving week (DH takes vacation so he can do that) and they are turned on at 6:00 PM Thanksgiving night as that is the official start of Christmas in my family. Inside decorations are put up as soon as I get the Autumn Village and other decorations taken down which is usually about Saturday night (after T-day).
  6. Favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Nothing particular -- we never had any specifically "Christmas Only" holiday foods that weren't dessert.
  7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? The family outing to pick out the Christmas Tree.
  8. When did you learn the truth about Santa? If this means that there isn't a Jolly little elf in a red suit who delivers gifts on Christmas Eve, then I don't really remember so it must not have been traumatic. There IS a Santa, and "he" is whichever person goes to the trouble to sneak around and surprise children with gifts they don't expect to get!
  9. When do you open gifts? DH was a Christmas Eve family and I was a Christmas morning family. When DD was small, ot was Christmas Day, after she moved out on her own, DH and I compromised and opened gifts AFTER midnight when it is officially December 25th. As a child, we could open one gift on 24 Dec. but had to wait for Christmas morning to open the rest.
  10. How do you decorate your tree? Many strings of colored lights that are the C7 type, not the little ones that are a PITA! Lots of ornaments, unique store bought and many hand-made, many of them kitty cats -- I even have 2 that were my on my Mom's tree at the beginning of WW2. Then glass bead garland -- 4 strands of it also from my Mom's tree. Lastly the icicles, loads and loads of icicles -- so much that you have to get up close and personal to actually see the ornaments. And it's not just laid on the outside but covers the length of the branches!
  11. Snow! Love it or dread it? LOVE it but growing up in LALA Land and then living in Lizard Land (AKA Scottsdale, AZ) I never had any. Here in Magnoliaville (AKA Atlanta Metro area), we get a few inches every few years.
  12. Do you know how to ice skate? Yep, learned at the nearby skating rink owned by the Zamboni family, one of whom invented the famous Zamboni machine that cleans the ice :-)!.
  13. Your favorite gift? It's usually something that someone had gotten me that is totally unexpected -- doesn't happen often but when it does, it is NEVER forgotten! Last year DH got me Tahitian Black Pearls, something I have wanted ever since we vacationed in Tahiti but could never afford and would NEVER ask for.
  14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? Being with my family and friends on Christmas. Next to that it is shopping for special gifts for them and my friends. I don't just buy something I think they will like. I *always* try to find something specific that will really show the recipient that I have thought about what I was giving.
  15. Favorite holiday dessert? Has to be my Date Torte Squares. I only make it at Christmas and the stuff is addictive!
  16. Favorite tradition? I don't know if I have a specific one. The whole holiday season is so filled with wonderful traditions that it's hard to choose! It's probably still going to buy the Christmas tree.
  17. What tops your tree? An angel -- one with lights up her dress!!!!!!
  18. What do you prefer, giving or getting? OH -- giving by far. I love to open my own gifts to see what someone has gotten me but I much prefer to see family and friends open their gifts. Both are selfish for me, either I am getting a gift or I am getting that "good feeling" from having a gift I gave make someone else happy!
  19. Favorite Christmas song? I have several, both traditional and "contemporary". For Traditional, it's probably O Little Town of Bethlehem & What Child Is This. For "Contemporary" there are several: The Christmas Song by Nat King Cole (even Mel Torme said Nat did the best rendition!); White Christmas by Bing Crosby (who else???); Carol of the Bells by some group who recorded in the 1960's (Robert Simeon Chorale or something like that) and Sleigh Ride by Johnny Mathis.
  20. Candy canes Yuck or yum YUM! Peppermint is my all time favourite hard candy. I LOVE the large peppermint sticks made by BOB'S and buy as many of them as I can find. Then I have DH hide them from me and only give me one when I specifically ask for it but never more than one a week!! Unfortunately, I can't find them here in Magnoliaville so I have to try and find them when we got to Lizard Land every year.
21 RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER OR HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS Assuming this means the movies, then neither actually! Rudolph is that Clay-mation stuff which I don't like but it's by far much better than the Grinch. I do NOT like the Grinch in any way shape or form -- I'm not a big Dr. Suess fan.
  1. Favorite Holiday Movie? Miracle on 34th Street, of course!!! I like both the first one made with Maureen O'Hara (or was it O'Sullivan??) as the Mom and Natalie Wood as the little girl. I like the third one made (I *think* there have only been 3 versions made) almost as well but can't remember the name of anyone who played in it. It follows the first one almost to the letter. The little girl is the one who has played in tons of movies but the only one I can even remotely remember is the one where Danny DeVito was her dad and he was horrible to her.

We were at grandparents and my sister and I were sleeping on the couch in the living room next to the tree so we watched.

Usually one on Christmas Eve and the rest the next morning.

Lights, then special ornaments, mostly one of a kind.

Love to see it. Don't really want to go out in it.

I tried it once or twice as a child. I didn't do well and don't mind.

Whatever I really want at that time. One year it was a big quilting hoop. One year it was a new wedding ring set.

Pecan pie, divinity.

rson, but I also love getting something special from those thoughtful enoug= h to know.

"O Holy Night" and "Mary Did You Know?" "I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas"

Yuk, but I do like peppermint flavored cheesecake, ice cream, and chocolate.

I liked Rudolph back in the day.

Christmas Vacation.

What fun, Mary! Ok, my answers:

Champagne. Or a single malt whiskey if I'm really cold. Or sick.

Santa brings one wrapped gift to all who believe, and a lump of coal for DH

Hot chocolate is best with a Peep floating in it. Therefore Egg Nog goes best with Kissmoose. Egg Nog is really good mixed with Kahlua.

Santa gives one present, unwrapped, under the tree, with a full stocking if you are 21 and under. Otherwise, Santa ignores your requests.

Bah humbug.

When I was in the mood, single color lights went in the house decorating walls, and on the outside. I haven't had a tree for years. If I did, it has to have a rootball and some place to plant in spring, and be covered in dog/cat toys as it simplifies things.

It's poisonous to pets, so no.

Not until the week or so before kissmoose.

Potatoes pirogie- half cheese, half sour cream, half hashed taters, half very bad at math recipe- baked for a while.

And Fauxtatoes.

the Garage Sale Kissmoose. Gram spent $2 at lots of different garage sales for each grandkid- we had a LOT of things to open, wrapped in newspaper. I got a few bronze horses and lots of other cool stuff.

I don't know the truth about Santa. I know what I believe, and Faith is above Truth in this matter.

When I was young, Kissmoose eve was spent with Mom's relations and we opened those presents then. Kissmoose morning was spent with Da's relatives and we opened everything that morning- but not until everyone had breakfast. Now... um, when I see people we trade off.

No tree. I don't like artificial, and I don't like killing trees. And 4 cats and 2 dogs will knock it over, climb it, pee on it, steal the ornaments, etc.

I love snow when I don't have to shovel or drive. Unfortunately I never get the luxury.

Yes, but I'm not very good.

Something really thoughtful. Usually what my sweetie gets.

When it's over.

I am such a huge scrooge. I *hate* the traveling, the arguments, the being ill for whatever tiny reason I get sick this time... But I do like seeing my family and thinking hard about what to get for them.

Chocolate Mousse.

When we were little and sleeping in the guest room at Meme's- granpa Burt used to go out in the back yard and use sleigh bells to remind us to go to sleep. Most of my fav traditions are in the past.

My parents have had angels, Santa, and stars.

Giving is always better. And I hate it when I can't give enough.

"A Christmas Carol" by Tom Lehrer. And "I'll be home for Christmas"

Eh.

How about Twas the Night Before Christmas?

Nightmare Before Christmas.

Yeah, I got the spirit, all right.

HOt Chocolate - Egg Nog is nasty!

fully wrapped and everything!

Colored lights on the tree in the house - nativity outside

nope

the weekend closest to my birthday is when the tree gets done and rooms get decorated - DH wants me to "wrap" pictures and hang them back on the wall to carry the decorating throughout the house

nothing in particular

always getting a stocking from my Nanny with a tangerine in the toe and handfuls of nuts. Also, sharing her Whitman's sampler box with her - back when there were at least 2 caramels in each layer .

Sad to admit it, but I was about6 or so and extremely ill on Christmas Eve. We owned the canning factory across the street and high winds blew the tin roof. WHen I asked Dad what it was, he said, "That's Santa!" My reply, which I can remember quite vividly was, "Then he must be really stupid because he's at a boat shop, not a house!" yep, I was jaded pretty early

We open the traditional flannel jammies on CHristmas Eve, then we open the rest on Christmas day....incorporates tradition from both DHs family and mine.

Hmm..this year we have one of those pre-lit artificial, so it was just a matter of plugging everything in. We have several garlands on it - made from metallic ribbon, but put together to look like the paper chains that children make in school. Then, the children got turned loose with all the non-breakable ornaments. Once they were done and ready to watch Christmas shows, DH and I did the collectible and breakable ornaments.

Like it better now that we are in VA...HATED it when we were in NY

I can keep my balance :-)

Time with my family without having to rush to see everyone else; quiet time

seeing the awe on my children's faces and knowing that they AREN'T jaded yet

Don't really have one. WIll be trying new recipes this year so that ALL of us can eat them...egg-free cooking is ...um...interesting

playing Christmas carols from the beginning of the month through Christmas day - now that I have a piano again, I can do this again!!!!

An angel, of course!!

all depends. I prefer helping out people who need help instead of just mindless giving, and I prefer getitng handmade things from the children in the family over store-bought "stuff".

Mary, Did You KNow? I cry and get shivers every single time I hear this song

depends on my mood I suppose

both. Children just got to watch Rudolph this past Friday and they have already watched the Grinch (movie, not tv show from yonks ago).

don't really have one. Though, I can remember when I was about DSs age (6) I caught part of Dr. Zhivago on late night tv at our neighbors house....that's the movie that my name came from. I vowed then that I would one day watch the entire movie - did when I was 18

Eggnog!

wrapped

No outside lights because I don't have an outdoor outlet but I have electric candles and a giant lighted wreath in the window. If I get a tree this year I'll have colored non-blinking lights on it.

no

When the spirit moves me.

Stuffing with gravy. It just tastes better at holiday time.

Going Christmas carolling with the youth group to sick and shut in members of our church, having hot chocolate afterwards then going to midnight mass.

I'm not sure exactly what year it was but I do remember asking my mother. Without coming right out and saying that he didn't exist, she tried to explain that Santa was the Spirit of Christmas. I stayed awake most of that Christmas Eve terrified that Santa was a ghost. It made perfect sense and also explained how he got into our house since we didn't have a fireplace! lol

When the kids were little they opened one on Christmas Eve then the rest on Christmas Day. Now that they're grown we open on Christmas Day.

Lots of small lights (no blinking!) and an eclectic assortment of ornaments collected over the years.

I love it falling softly off and on between Thanksgiving and Christmas but after that I'd be very happy if I never saw a flake.

Yes but I haven't skated in years.

My first kitten. I was 8 and it was all I asked Santa for that year. :o)

Family. I just wish we could all get together in one place.

Pecan pie with vanilla ice cream.

Taking turns opening gifts on Christmas Day. The fun lasts longer and everyone gets to see what everyone else got.

A star

Definitely giving.

Joy to the World

maybe one but that's about it...... give me chocolate! lol

It's Christmas, Charlie Brown!

White Christmas, The Bells of St Mary's, and Holiday Inn. I just love Bing Crosby. :o)

When do you open gifts? : It used to be Christmas morning - VERY early (as early as we could sneak out of our rooms!) : : 10. How do you decorate your tree? : My last tree has just gone to a new home - complete with lots of flashing white lights and gold and ivory decorations and miles of gold and silver tinsel. Probably my prettiest ever tree. I used to have an artificial topiary tree in black, and I decorated it differently every year. It was about 5' high and looked quite beautiful too.

All Christmas trees look beautiful, especially the battered slightly askew "older" ones. I am always sad to see the fake trees thrown out when they get so battered they cannot be used anymore, or the real trees thrown out for fire wood or in the rubbish. We couldn't burn ours (no fire place) so I do remember asking for a "not real" tree when I was about

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?

Definitely hot chocolate. I've never tasted an egg nog that I liked.

  1. Does Santa wrap presents or set under tree?

When he used to come, Santa left presents unwrapped near the tree. The children are grown and gone and have families of their own. Santa leaves grandchildren's presents unwrapped for the most part.

  1. Colored lights on tree/house?

White lights all around the roof of the wrap-around porch, outlining the doors, and on some small trees on the porch. Colored lights on the tree indoors.

  1. Hang mistletoe?

No.

  1. When do you put up decorations?

The weekend following Thanksgiving. I LOVE all the decorations and like them up for as long as I can get away with them. Many of them were handcrafted. I made a Christmas Traditions quilt, fabric tree ornaments, stuffed cloth tree, etc.

  1. Favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?

That's a hard one, but I guess I'll go with the turkey and dressing combo.

  1. Favorite holiday memory as a child?

I have a dreadful memory and honestly don't remember my childhood Christmases. That was a LONG time ago!

  1. When did you learn the truth about Santa?

I kept it up for a LONG time. I didn't stop believing until the Christmas that I was in fourth grade.

  1. When do you open gifts?

As a child, we opened wrapped gifts on Christmas Eve and had Santa on Christmas morning. However when I had my own kids, everything was on Christmas morning and that has continued with my grandchildren.

  1. How do you decorate your tree?

It's a total hodge-podge of every kind of ornament I've gotten or made over many years. It has garlands of faux cranberries, strings of paper cut-out teddy bears, and a lighted angel on top.

  1. Snow! Love it or dread it?

This is Georgia. We don't get it too often, but I enjoy it unless it's accompanied by loss of electricity!

  1. Do you know how to ice skate?

Yes, although I broke my arm ice-skating as an adult. The group in front of me stopped and I didn't know how to do that very well. I went head first and the only way to keep from crashing my head was to put out my arm. Ouch! We don't have many places to skate here, though. (I did skate more after my arm got better. Then they closed the skating rink.)

  1. Your favorite gift?

No special favorite. I get excited about all my gifts!

  1. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you?

The holiday spirit...sing-alongs, decorated yards, get-togethers, etc.

  1. Favorite holiday dessert?

Pecan pie

  1. Favorite tradition?

It's actually a tradition of a friend, but I enjoyed it a lot! She lives on a lake and we went Christmas caroling in her boat, accompanied by a musician playing an accordion.

  1. What tops your tree?

A tall angel in a beautiful cloth dress, lit from within. She holds a lit candle in her hand.

  1. What do you prefer, giving or getting?

Giving, when I've made good choices!!

  1. Favorite Christmas song?

I love so many that I wouldn't know how to choose. I start playing all my Christmas CDs at Thanksgiving and have them going every day through Christmas.

  1. Candy canes Yuck or yum

They're okay, but not my favorite, but I do decorate my tree with them.

21 Favorite Christmas TV show?

"How the Grinch Stole Christmas," the original cartoon version, is my favorite. I have a stuffed Grinch sitting on my hearth. You squeeze his hand and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" plays as his upper body dances around.

  1. Favorite Holiday Movie?

Miracle on 34th Street, the old version

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Egg Nog, can have hot chocolate any day of the week

  1. Does Santa wrap presents or set under tree? Santa either wraps them or puts them in gift bags, since I know the real reason of Christmas and we have no babies or toddlers or even children in my household, although I agree Santa is in the heart.

  1. Colored lights on tree/house? Colored lights on trees and nothing outside this year at least
  2. Hang mistletoe? We use to when we could find it, my father is too old to go shoot it out of a tree now.
  3. When do you put up decorations? I guess I am terrible but the truth is whenever the mood hits. Has taken me two weeks to get my tree decorated this year. 6. Favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? I can't think of any one thing, I would rather have a pot of pinto beans with cornbread, butter, onion and homemade chow-chow, why waste such a beautiful holiday in the kitchen?
  4. Favorite holiday memory as a child? The busyness, not sure that is a word, of town on Christmas eve. My father was in business and we always had to stay at the store late on Christmas eve while he delivered Santa to everyone else.

  1. When did you learn the truth about Santa? Well, I think that Santa is in our hearts but when I learned that he didn't come down the chimney was in the 3rd grade because one of my packages didn't get in for Christmas and I was at the store when the mailman delivered it.

  2. When do you open gifts? Being all three of us girls worked in the medical field and had to work lots of Christmas' it was always when we were all could be here. Now we opened them on Christmas morning as a child and we do now too unless my one sister has to work and so far we have not encountered that in several years because she has the most seniority at her job.

  1. How do you decorate your tree? Everything, except for one ornament is Hallmark on my tree and represents things that are important to me. But seems this year I only could get to the box with some miscellaneous stuff and Santa's so I have mostly Santa's on my tree. Actually, had to send nephew after the boxes and that is what he brought up.

  2. Snow! Love it or dread it? I love snow, in increments of about 4 inches, anything more than that is too much and I hate it when it gets dirty from the coal trucks driving by on the main highway.
  3. Do you know how to ice skate? Nope and too old to learn

  1. Your favorite gift? I don't think that I have a favorite gift but I definitely have two un favorite , anything to clean house with and money

  1. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? the fact that we celebrate Christ's birthday and family being together and not fussing.

  1. Favorite holiday dessert? Being diabetic I consider Egg Nog a dessert and it is by all means my favorite at Christmas time, un spiked please. 16. Favorite tradition? Christmas Eve church service with communion

  1. What tops your tree? An Angel
  2. What do you prefer, giving or getting? I love to give, I don't care if I get anything but I enjoy giving so much.
  3. Favorite Christmas song? Someone else has already said my favorite which is Mary did you Know, but I have a second and third also, Winter Wonder Land and It's Beginning to Look a Lot like Christmas
  4. Candy canes I can take them or leave them.
21 RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER OR HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS Don't pass out but I have never seen How the Grinch Stole Christmas, he just never appealed to me, I love Rudolph but I always cry during it because they are so mean to him, same with Frosty, I cry when he melts.
  1. Favorite Holiday Movie? Miracle on 34th Street

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Chocolate - don't like Egg Nog.
  2. Does Santa wrap presents or set under tree? Wrapped and under the tree (all grown ups), but not from Santa. When children were little (- no until they were quite big!) they had separate Santa presents which were in their big red stockings by the fireplace on Christmas morning. They had lots of smaller things in the stockings, but the big presents went under the tree with everyone elses.
  3. Colored lights on tree/house? White lights on mini Christmas Tree inside. Tree has been drastically down-sized for smaller house. Cats haven't noticed it yet! No outside decorations except a wreath on the door (reminder to self to put the batteries in the mini lights on the wreath!).
  4. Hang mistletoe? Never have - thus avoiding being 'caught' under the mistletoe by people I didn't want to be caught by! DH didn't need mistletoe!
  5. When do you put up decorations? Mid December, when everyone else has put theirs up and our house starts to look bare!
  6. Favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Christmas isn't Christmas without the full Christmas Lunch of Turkey and all the trimmings followed by traditional Christmas Pudding. That doesn't count as a dessert as it HAS to follow the Turkey!
  7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Being able to stay up late with all the family.
  8. When did you learn the truth about Santa? I asked at about 6 and then cried when I got the truth!
  9. When do you open gifts? Children used to open stockings on Christmas morning (hopefully not too early), and grownups after Christmas Lunch and the Queen's Speech. This year is DD's first time organising Christmas in her own home so its a case of wait and see! I'm hoping it will be a little earlier than 3.15p.m.!
  10. How do you decorate your tree? With mini tree have had to scale down. Small string of white lights, a few baubles and lots of angels.
  11. Snow! Love it or dread it? Love it if I'm inside and warm, but not if it disrupts the Christmas travelling.
  12. Do you know how to ice skate? Know how to but never have - didn't have the opportunity when I was the right age to learn - no ice!
  13. Your favorite gift? A real surprise of something I've been thinking about but wouldn't ask for. On a more realistic note, tokens (either book or home-made tokens for quilty things. No-one has ever given me chocolates which I would like! (My father always used to give my mother chocolates that came in big boxes with little drawers - I quite fancy that!)
  14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? Sharing and having lots of family together.
  15. Favorite holiday dessert? Any chocolate dessert with cream
  16. Favorite tradition? Traditional Christmas lunch. - oh, and Mince Pies or course
  17. What tops your tree? An angel but she keeps falling off.
  18. What do you prefer, giving or getting? Giving - before Christmas I am so absorbed in the giving bit I can never think of anything when asked what I want.
  19. Favorite Christmas song? 'O Holy Night' but has to be sung by Michael Crawford.
  20. Candy canes Yuck or yum Not something I've ever really noticed - except the pictures. I presume its like the 'rock' we get at seaside places in the summer but thinner and bent! Prefer chocolate.
21 RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER OR HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS Grinch - not the film, haven't seen it. Someone gave DD the book for Christmas once, so I associate it with my children.
  1. Favorite Holiday Movie? DD always watched Wizard of Oz at Christmas so the memories of that make it my favourite holiday movie. However, if I had a choice I would watch City of Angels.

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Egg Nog!! COLD

Santa wraps presents and sets them under the tree.

Tiny white lights. No outside lights (I live far back from the road and they really would not be seen.

I hang it EVERYWHERE!

I start the weekend after Thanksgiving. However, every year we have the real vs artificial tree arguement so it takes another week or two to get the real tree.

We have a pretty traditional meal each year. No "special dish" comes to mind.

We spent Christmas each year with my grandparents who lived in Arburndale, FL. They lived next to an orange juice factory. Between the delightful sweet smell of the oranges from the factory, the gardenias in bloom and my grandfather's prize hibiscus, my Christmas memories are very much based on scent.

I have a 2 1/2 yr old dgs. The truth about Santa is that the spirit of Christmas is alive in the eyes of a child. I have known this truth as a big sister to a younger brother, the mother of four and now Nana to Michael.

Everyone gets to open ONE gift on Christmas eve, and the rest upon awakening Christmas Day.

Once the real/artificial tree discussion is over and I get my real tree, we wind several strings of tiny white lights. Then the wonderful collection of ornaments that include antiques from my childhood (which were old when I was a child), to some with special meaning (I have a set of breyer horse ornaments and Harry Potter ornaments since I have read the books aloud to the family) to some made by my now adult children when they were in school or given to me as gifts. No garland.

LOVE IT!! (I am a teacher and LOVE snow days, as does my goofy Bernese Mtn. Dog)

um...no....I am VERY clumsy and the thought of trying to balance my bulk on a tiny blade is just frightening.

How can you pick one?? I try (and drive myself and everyone else nuts) to get the gift that will truely show someone I thought about THEM and how important they are in my live.

The time reliving old memories and creating new ones.

I love homemade fudge, but also we have a cookie decorating tradition which I guess counts as dessert.

Decorating the cookies! ONE day I may even construct a gingerbread house that would not need a tractor trailer to move it and be a fatal weapon if dropped on someone's head.

An angel that is showing serious signs of wear.

I do love getting gifts, but giving the RIGHT gift is far more rewarding.

Silent Night. And a wonderful song I used to hear performed at school pagents when I lived in SC, that I do not know the name of nor have heard since I moved to WV.

HORSE TREATS!! I get everyone's candy canes after the holidays for my hog horses. They adore them.

Grinch - the original cartoon.

by far it is "It's a Wonderful Life" I ADORE that movie.

Mulled wine for something warm

  1. Does Santa wrap presents or set under tree? My girls each put their stocking on an armchair in the living room (for want of a chimney!) The grownup presents are wrapped and under the tree

Nope...never did that. But we do hang decorations in the window.

Nope

Once the girls are through writing exams (my two are older, one is in university). Once the studying is done they are ready to get in the Xmas mood

Turkey!!! With stuffing!!!

Don't remember. But I do remember telling my younger brother that I had heard Santa and the reindeer on the roof on Christmas eve....so I must've realized the importance of believing.

especially those from Santa, the next day (my tradition). .

First - it has to be a REAL tree!! Then use lots of unbreakable ornaments for when the cats play with them!

go to work! I don't like shovelling under pressure.

The best one was the year that I asked DH for some boxes to store my stash. Was expecting practical plastic boxes from WalMart or the like. Instead I got a large beautiful carved wooden chest. Looks gorgeous in our living room

Having everyone over for turkey dinner on the 25th.

Changes year to year. And who has room after the turkey anyway?

Putting up the tree. Tried to skip it one year when we were visiting family at Xmas instead of staying home....but got so many complaints that I bought a small Norfolk Island pine to decorate!

still have to use!

person!! That's the hard part.

The one with all the Glorias....the name slips my mind right now. You know which one i mean: Glo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ri-a in excelsis deo........

I agree with you on this one!

Merry xmas everyone!!!! Allison

What fun ... Christmas Activities!

  1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Actually, I'd rather have Gluehwein (German Mulled Wine.)

  1. Does Santa wrap presents or set under tree? Small items are wrapped. Big stuff like bikes are draped with a quilt.

  2. Colored lights on tree/house? Yes and yes.

  1. Hang mistletoe? Yes, Faux Mistletoe.

  2. When do you put up decorations? We do it as the weather, and family schedule permit; also depends on what day is Christmas. The inside and outside usually decorated by Dec. 10 and we put up a real tree around Dec. 18-20.

  1. Favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)? Prime Rib, usually, but that is not 'required.'

  2. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Seeing the Christmas tree decorated and lighted on Christmas morning. Santa's Elves did all the work while we slept on Christmas Eve!

  1. When did you learn the truth about Santa? I don't understand the question! Santa and I are good friends; we trust and respect each other. I leave him Wine (or Gluehwein) and Cheese and he leaves me gifts. What's to learn?

  2. When do you open gifts? One on Christmas Eve, others in the Morning.

  1. How do you decorate your tree? We always have a real tree, with multicolored lights, and some bubble lights. Also tinsle garlands, and some candy canes. We have assorted decorations bought here and abroad, and hand crafted items, collected over 38 years, as well as a few old ornaments from our parents' trees. It is not a glamorous tree, but is beautiful to us.

  2. Snow! Love it or dread it? Snow is a novelty in this part of Virginia. So it is fun.

  1. Do you know how to ice skate? Certainly!

  2. Your favorite gift? Usually something someone made for me, or a really goofy item!

  1. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? Remembering the reason for the season.

  2. Favorite holiday dessert? Lebkuchen, any good chocolate, and Stollen. (I refuse to have just one favorite, in this or other categories!)

  1. Favorite tradition? Putting junk gifts in stockings, and seeing who can get the tackiest stuffers!!

  2. What tops your tree? Angel with a gold dress ... bodacious!

  1. What do you prefer, giving or getting? I really prefer to give, but I also enjoy seeing the excitement of a giver who has gotten the 'perfect gift' ... for me, or for anyone else.

  2. Favorite Christmas song? Hark the Herald Angels Sing. Joy to the World. Winter Wonderland.

  1. Candy canes Yuck or yum Yum. They are good stirrers for hot cocoa. They look pretty on a Christmas Tree. (Do NOT put them on the front door wreath! The sun melts thme and there is a mess on the door!)

21 RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER OR HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS Neither ... give me Frosty the Snow Man or Charlie Brown's Christmas!

  1. Favorite Holiday Movie? Miracle on 34th Street. White Christmas. It's a Wonderful Life. I like the sentimental ones!
