OT: Mom update

Mom is still hospitalized. They got her up for a few steps yesterday with a walker. The problem with the walker is that she still has shoulder pain from the dislocated shoulder after her last fall. Up until this point, she has steadfastly refused to use the walker or a cane.

A this point, they believe a lot of the pain is due to gout and have been medicating her for that but they are still unsure about the infection. In order to give her the pain meds, they had to reduce the blood thinner levels, so they are also monitoring her for blood clots. They are waiting for the results of some more tests. With the antibiotic cocktail, the swelling in one leg has gone down, but not the other.

She is very depressed still and has made statements, even in front of the little grandchildren, about not wanting to go on. She does have her dog, Joey, to whom she is very much attached and we keep telling her that he needs her and misses her. Too bad we can't bring him to the hospital.

Sending prayers and good thoughts for your mom's recovery, and for your family. Did you ask the hospital about the dog? Believe it or not, when my grandson was in the hospital recently, there was a female volunteer bringing two cute dogs in to visit the elderly and the children. They called it therapy, and it sure is!

Glad to hear there's some small improvement and may it continue. When my former husband was hospitalized for a month, I brought his dog to the hospital's outside door and he met me there. We sat on a bench in the sun and he threw a ball for the dog. It was a very good thing for him as he was very depressed after being "incarcerated" for so long. Do ask. Many hospitals are realizing how important little things like pets are to the recovery process.

I second this! I took my dog to visit my elderly neighbor in the nursing home and the staff gave Scotty a *warm* welcome every time. So did the other residents too. Now Nils is in assisted living quarters but is severely depressed due to losing his wife last Nov. and Scotty is about the only "person" he relates to anymore. I can see the difference in him after a 40-50 minute visit.
