OT OT Coffee Roasting

Now nobody should really be surprised to hear me ask this..... anyone out there roast their own coffee beans at home?? Anyone have good sites, equipment recommendations, bean sources etc???? I am just thinking of roasting my own so I can have more quilting time and less coffee hunting time

I have actually thought about buying some coffee plants, but I'm afraid the plant eating dogs that I own will start eating and then I'll be spending all my time cleaning :-)))

As for work... hey... I already grind my own grain and bake my own bread..... what's a little coffee roasting on the side ;-)

Oh, goodness me, no..... I wouldn't even attempt to roast my own coffee. I'm just fortunate enough to live in the coffee capital of the U.S. There are coffee stands and coffee bars and coffee shops on every corner, really! I have access to some of the best coffee in the world - love it, love it, love it. I like Starbucks if it's iced, but not too crazy about it hot - it has a bit of an over-roasted, burnt flavor to me. Peet's is good, Tully's is wonderful, and then there's the hundreds of micro-roasters everywhere. If you lived here Jan, you'd never go to sleep.... lol. Hope you can find what you're looking for.

Went to a coffee tasting once, held at a coffee shop where the lady behind the counter came in second in an all-Europe barista competition. Her husband, who handled all the buying, said it wasn't worth it to roast his own beans. He relied on a supplier whose taste he trusted. He did his own grinding though, sometimes several times during the day to adjust for changes in humidity. (But strongly advised against small grinders and so-called espresso machines designed for the home kitchen -they were not up to his standard.) Roberta in D

I've been reading up on this more and most suggest doing it outside. I'm now picturing my neighbors... who already think I'm a few fries short of a happy meal. (Remind me to tell you all about fixing my flat tire this winter while DH was out of town.) Last year when I decided to attempt dying fabric, I was doing it on the back porch and got some very strange looks. I can just see them now when I start roasting coffee out there. Seriously considering a drum roaster that would work on the grill rotisserie. I'll update you all when I get going Thanks for the links and suggestions!!

Well Jan, they will either think you've lost your mind, or they will all be lined up at your back door every morning with an empty cup in hand. I know I would be! Where are you going to find your green beans? A couple of my friends roast their own, and they get their beans from some kind of "fair trade" site online..... want me to try and find out for you??

I would love to know where they find theirs! Thanks Patti! I have been bookmarking sites along the way that sell the beans green... and I prefer fair trade and organic. I've convinced my husband to go with me to a roasterie here in town for a free tour I like fun hobbies ;-)

That's one of the things I remember most about a visit to Seattle in the early 90's. All the coffee shops! We were at a neat ice cream shop waiting for our order when a woman rushed in and breathlessly asked the clerk if they sold coffee..."no"...then she ran out the door! She NEEDED a fix!

How do you think all those "techies" at Microsoft manage to work so many hours? There's a local artist who is very in tune with the coffee culture here, and he did a poster with a guy sitting at a computer and his head is a coffee cup. Another one shows people scurrying about downtown, holding very colorful umbrellas, and it's raining coffee beans. They're quite unique, very colorful and very Seattle. During one of our storms when something like 3 million of us lost power, I went to work, and there in the lobby, were five, 5 gallon coffee pots so we could all "function" for the day. Nobody cared about food.... just needed our caffeine fix!

...what about the double act that comes to the door to 'chat' just as you sit down to your favourite cuppa cha and the sunday paper sitting out back on the deck in the sunshine on a glorious spring/summer/fall/winter morning? i'd call that 'messing with your coffee'. but i could be mistaken. argh. oh well, thats just me i guess. jeanne
