OT: Pulled the plug

Ok, within two weeks I'll have my own computer again -- no more sneaking a few minutes here or there on somebody else's computer. I've felt like that old story "Man Without a Country." I decided on a Dell

-- we've had three good computers from Dell, and at the end it was money that decided the matter. I found an unbeatable deal that included a screen and printer for under $800. It's got 5 gigs of SDRam and 600+ hard drive. Sigh. All I'll have to do is stay calm and not freak about about making space for the computer in my sewing room. I hate making big purchases. Hate it. But it will be good to have "my computer" back in the house.

Woo-hoo! Congrats, Sunny. Now to be patient until it arrives... At least it gives you a chance to decide where to put it. :-)

I know what you mean about making a big purchase. However, big purchase or not, nowadays, quilters NEED a computer.

Is your old one completely dead? if not, you can spend that time making lists of things you want to copy over, saving files you want keep, reading up on how to transfer all those bookmarks, making notes of settings (like for your email!).

When I get a new computer, it always takes AT LEAST two weeks to try to sort through the "stuff" on the old one! I hate to just copy everything over -- part of the blessing of a new computer is getting rid of a lot of that "stuff"!!

Congrats & have fun!

That should be fine for your uses. I think that Dell is one of the better PC Makers. They certainly sell a lot of them. If you can swing the deal, you might think about purchasing a "Back up stand alone storage hard drive", that connects to a USB port on your new computer. Then you can regularly backup all those files and pictures, "That "You Can't Afford To Lose". It should be considered essential to any computer ownership. You can schedule routine backup sessions or just do it when you "Really" want to make sure that "Vital Bit of Data, Music, Photo's, or whatever is preserved. They are not too expensive, about a $250 or so. The best investment I ever made in computers. It has saved me from really being sorry I lost everything when the inevitable crash happens.

I have two external hard drives for my desktop and one for my laptop so far. My husband has his own. I make backups of my desktop once per week and incrementally daily. I keep one offsite while the other is in action. I also make an image of my hard drives. That's my "belt and suspenders" strategy. If my house burns down (God forbid), at least all my docs and pix are safe offsite.

I get external drives the same size as my hard drives or a bit bigger. Since the priority is to back up "My Documents" I don't necessarily need an external drive that's more than internal hard drive. In our parts, these are selling for well under 100 bucks. A cheap insurance policy to be sure!

I love Dell computers as well. I've had Dells for as long as I can remember. Good luck with your new one, I know you're going to love it!
