question about black/dark batting

Good morning everyone

As per the request of DD2, I have started a flying geese quilt in using moda marbles. The geese are all in very bright colors, and all the background is black. So I'm thinking of using a black or dark batting so that the light batting will not alter the color of the black fabric.

Which black batting do you recommend? Is there a cotton batting that is darker? All I seem to be able to find is poly batting. I would like the thickest possible batting, black or very dark in color. What are your suggestions?

Thanks

Claudia

Hobbs 80/20 Heirloom comes in black. Hobbs 80/20 is my favorite batting, though I've never used the black. I'd be more concerned about the black batting affecting the color of the colored fabric than the light batting affecting the color of the black fabric, unless you're concerned with the batting bearding. I've never had any problems with bearding with the Hobbs 80/20. Bearding is more common with a polyester batting. If you want a polyester batting, Hobbs Polydown comes in black. I have used the white Polydown but not the black; it is a nice poly batting, very easy to handquilt.

I used the Hobbs black polydown in a quilt for DS1 and wife. The quilt is navy with bright blocks and appliqué. I machine quilted it, and didn't find that it dulled the colours in the blocks (bright jewel tones). Hope this helps

I've used the Hobbs 80/20 cotton/poly in black, and it works beautifully, just as I'd expect from Hobbs 80/20, whether white or black. :) I'll use it again, I'm sure, the next time I do a quilt with a black or navy background. :)

Claudia,

I have found that the dark batting makes the color look odd and the seam allowances really bright. JMHO but I would go with a natural batting.

Claudia, I did a dark-background quilt with a black poly batting and it turned out well. It's not terribly thick, but you could always double- layer it. There's a dark version of Warm & Natural called "Warm & Dark", but it can be harder to find.
