dark fabric for CCS - and Houston shop question.

I probably sound like a newbie with all these questions. I have been "away" from the hobby for a while. The biggest problem is that the wonderful shop that was available for many years that carried just about everything a cross stitcher could dream of, went OOB about 7 years ago and from what I can tell, nothing has really filled the gap. I have one possible choice but it's a 40 min drive. I'm not able to do that often.

anyway - on to my question. I would like to know what dark fabrics are available for cross stitching. I saw some dark Hardanger (which I have stitched on before, long ago) that may be "inappropriate" but it worked. Any reason I can't use Hardanger fabric for non-hardanger stitching? Technically, that is. I find only a very small selection of dark fabrics in Aida cloth: Black, a "Victorian Christmas Green" and Navy. What I'd really love to find would be a dark burgundy cloth but are reds problematic? In the ink world, they are.

Suggestions anyone? Preferences? I have some old Charles Craft black Aida cloth. best I've seen is 18ct. I'd rather not go for a low-count fabric if at all possible. Hey, I'm in a hurry to ruin my vision. :P (joking of course)

Any Houston area folks here who know of a shop on the south side. Or have you been to Harbour in League City?

Depends on where you mean by "south". :-)

I like Creative Stitchery in Richmond.

Nope. Hardanger works just fine.

Whether it's problematic probably depends on what you want to do with it. As far as finding a dark burgundy, you could try places that carry hand-dyed fabrics, like:

I think some counts of Wichelt linen come in "wild raspberry," which might do the trick.

yeah - that is a bit vague isn't it... we're so darn spread out here. I'm in the Pearland/Friendswood area. Richmond is a bit too far. :( I could go with anything near the Med center, Hobby area, and as far south as Clear Lake. I'm gonna call Harbour today and try to get a feel for their inventory. League city is not my favorite drive but if I have to go clear lake, then I can go the extra 3 or 4 miles.

There are a virtual rainbow of fabric colors in evenweave (jobalin, linen, etc.) Several online sources exist. The first that universaly comes to mind is Nordic Needle but a search on google usually yields multiple shops nationwide In my personal "stash" I've obtained some lovely aubergine, grape & burgundy fabrics bought "here & there". I would start with the google search for needlework shops in your local area (you may find a new "gem"). Also the shop that you already know of may have a website that you could order from and have it shipped if distance is a problem. Happy searching and stitching Betsy

I am not affiliated, etc, but I have alweays loved Silkweaver as an on-line source. They will relate to a DMC color if you ask nicely!!

i've just had a great exchange with them - very prompt and very helpful. And ooooh so many colors. Looks like Nordic Needle has a ton of stuff too - and I've bookmarked them as well.>

Hi Ericka - I talked to silkweaver folks - didn't find a dark burgundy I liked (yet - there's so much to look at) but did find some gorgeous dark greens (which may be preferred for this project anyway). Silkweaver folks were great and I received my order in yesterday's mail. i think that was a

2 day turn-around. They found a sheet of stunning dark "teal" (more of a forest green to my eye) Belfast linen. Unfortunately, it's the last of it but I'm glad she found it for me.

Thanks for the help and for leading me to a good business transaction. KCat
