Not Quite Quilting But....

what I have been working on lately and it will eventually be a quilt:

I am cross stitching each letter as an individual block on aida cloth (there will be 42 total blocks because I will do all the alphabet letters, plus six of them again for our last name, four of the "motif" blocks which is the block in the upper left corner, four the "heart" blocks which is the one in the lower right corner, one block that says "established in 1973" (the year we were married) and one block that has the name of family members. All of the cross stitching is being done in DMC 796 (a nice dark blue) except the six blocks with the letters for our last name will be done in a different color of blue so it will stand out from the other blocks. When I am done with all the cross stitching, then I will begin setting them into quilt blocks and assembling the quilt. That is when I will probably be asking you all for help. Of course, I will be using all blue fabrics for the quilt as blue is my favorite color. I have started collecting some blue fabrics for the quilt part, although not knowing what the quilt will eventually look like, that is kinda hard, lol. So far, I have complete one Motif block, the A, B, C, D, and E blocks and am working on the F block, so the actually quilting part is still quite a ways off, lol. This is a nice project to take in the car as each piece of aida is only about 8" x 10" and everything fits into a nice storage box I got at Staples or Office Depot. Each finished block is about 4 1/2" x 6". I don't have any pictures of the finished blocks posted yet, I am waiting until I get the new computer hooked up to post pictures, hopefully later this week or early next week.

Pretty! I love blue too, and think this will look better in blue than in red. While you're collection fabric, keep an eye out for some very lightweight cotton. You'll want it to interline the aida blocks. Aida is so loosely woven that it could leak batting otherwise. (BTDT) Roberta in D

Oh, wow! I thought that sampler was beautiful when I saw it some months back, but I knew I'd go nuts doing so much in one color. You have my admiration!

LOL, I thought that too when I first considered doing this. But I actually got to see the original piece stitched up at the designer's house before the chart was published (Karen Kluba of Rosewood Manor is an absolute doll) and fell in love. Then on the drive home, this vision of a quilt with those letters as blocks popped into my head, then I thought about it off and on until the chart was published and then I waited several more months and thought about it some more. Then a cross stitching group I belong to had a retreat in Indianapolis last June and Karen visited the retreat attendees and brought several of her charts (including ABC Tapestry of course), so I decided to give in to my vision and do this as a quilt. So, probably sometime in ohhhh about ten years or so, I might get to see what my finished quilt looks like, lol.
