Need quilting ideas

Aug 20, 2006 9 Replies

I got into my sewing room today and put together a top from some BOMs I just finished. I think I'd like to hand quilt this one, but I'm not sure what the best way to quilt this is.

Anyone have any ideas.

Almost forgot, the photo is in the works in progress album.

It's at , for anyone who's trying to find it.

Maureen, it's gorgeous! I love those bright colors on black -- they really sparkle. Quilting? I think anything that shows a lot will detract from the blocks. Maybe you should just use some invisible thread and quilt in the ditch or with an unobtrusive all-over pattern?

I love it! My kinda colors! Can't help with the quilting though...still a newbie when it come to that! LOL

Depending on the block pattern SITD is always a good way to go. Especially if you don't do a lot of hand quilting. Anymore I love stenciling on designs for my quilting. julia

Or maybe do outline quilting -- 1/4 inch around all black patches.... probably with black thread and matching in the colored patches.

M: When faced with a similar situation, here's what I did. First, SITD along the sashing, with thread to match, adding a little curved line in the contrast colored squares. (Black thread, on your quilt.) Then, I did basic stippling in thread to match the background fabric, white on my quilt, black on yours. Finally, I used some invisible thread add some interest here and there. I think I might go back and add details to the color portions, using a variegated thread. HTH. PAT

PS: I love your BOM! As Sandy helpfully reported: It's at ,

Thanks for all the ideas. I already have some black thread, so I'll start there and then see what happens.

Okay, I'm going to disagree with everyone else. I would *not* stitch in the ditch, not with hand quilting. If I am going to hand quilt I want it to show. So, I might use a bright variegated thread and do a cable or some such in the sashing/borders. In the blocks, echo quilting would work, black in the color sections and bright in the black areas. Or use a motif of some sort in alternate blocks, or just some of the blocks. Or use a couple/few different motifs to quilt in the blocks, or quilt each block differently. Lots of possibilities here. But definitely show the stitches.

Howdy!

Yeah, what Pati said.
