I started making some of the blocks for hand work to do while watching TV. Then DH asked what I had planned, so I had to come up with an idea. I had always wanted to do a mariner's compass, and had fun finding all the seasonal fabrics in my stash to show the changing seasons. I am really hooked on appliqué lately!

I AM leaning to individual treatments of the blocks, but with similar amounts of quilting, no matter what type. I just don't know how successful I'll be with that. Some of the blocks are telling me what they want. Others definitely are NOT! :) I'll keep posting pictures and when there's been significant progress, I'll post a link. I haven't worked on it much lately because I've been also doing a Carol Doak block of the month project and I was trying to get it all together into a finished top before folding it and putting it away for a while.

In Barbara Chainey's book 'Quilt It' she has a sampler quilt which she describes as having 'outline and echo quilting combined with a small motif repeated in each of the sampler blocks. The motif could be described as two oval pointed leaves joined from the bottom to half way up. Where they separate there is a little oval bud. On some blocks the motifs are in each corner, the fan has 2 one on top of the other in the wide blank space which she has echoed round the fan, a couple have the motif in the middle. The basket has three motifs between the handle and the basket - very pretty. Its very straight forward - except for the little motif the quilting is just straight lines, all the same distance apart (prob. 1/4") except of course for the fan which is curved. Each block ends up with more or less the same amount of quilting and the little motif really ties the quilt together.

I have it in my 'try to remember' part of my brain.
