Quilting Flannel Batting?

I'm making a string quilt; strings are sewn to 10" muslin squares and the finished size will be about 95" x 105". I've sewn 36 blocks together and they are predictably heavy (I told DH it may be the perfect quilt--we'll never be able to get out of bed once we get under it!). I plan to use flannel as batting because of the weight (normally I'd use W & N) Questions: how closely does flannel need to be quilted? No fancy quilting here--just enough to hold it together for about ten years! Also, would some other batting be better?

TIA muchly.

Howdy!

Do you mean as an actual batting, to place between your strippy top and another fabric backing? Or as a combination substitute for batting/backing? Otherwise you have the strippy top, the muslin liner, a layer of flannel batting and then the backing...? How heavy do you want this thing? In this case, the flannel would be enough w/ the top & muslin liner.

Btw, my strippy quilt tops don't have a foundation/liner, don't like foundation piecing; I just put them together like any other quilt top; so far it's worked for me (no brain: no worry!). IF I were using a batting w/ flannel (top &/or back) I'd choose Hobbs Thermore. How close to quilt? My standard is 2"-2 1/2" inches between quilting lines. YMMV

Good luck!

If you're using flannel - not some type of batting - you need to quilt it just enough to hold all the layers together.
