Re: Silk Batting

I've just seen an advert for Silk Batting (over here batting is often called wadding). Never seen this before, and they say that it took a lot of sourcing.

Has anyone used a silk one? I quite like the idea of doing a wallhanging and using up the bits of silk I keep hoarding.

This firm (I've used them before for silk fabric but NAYY) are having a stall at a show I'm going to in the Autumn so I thought I might order a 36" piece to collect from there (and save postage) and be temped by their fabric too.

Haven't really thought of a design - perhaps a landscape/seascape(?) but I have a couple of months to think.

I picked up some quilt bat samples at the Hobbs booth at the MN Quilt Show. One of these silk....it feels really nice, but haven't tried using it yet. I would think it would be great!

I haven't used it, Sally; but I have heard that it is absolutely heavenly to work with. . In message , Sally Swindells writes

I haven't bought any because of the price.

However, at the big show here (PIQF) there used to be a silk batting booth. They had a quilt sandwich set up and you could quilt away on it. It was quite lovely to quilt through.

I purchased one at a show, the crib size was on a special sale and I thought I'd try one - I'm waiting for the right quilt top. I was told to wear gloves when handling the batt or wadding (as it tends to cling to your hands).

The batts at the shop Sally posted are actually at the best price I have seen on silk batts so far. I believe that at the moment UK37.50 for a 98x106 would come in at about US70 (order page says that includes VAT). By far the least expensive in all my looking about at the things. About US7.00 for shipping and it is still less expensive than the other silk batts I've looked at, and the first one of that size I have seen. With the 71x98 one coming in at about US45, it actually makes silk batting for a special quilt or project a viable possibilty.

And as I recall the goth sewists in the UK think highly of the Silk Route.

I haven't even seen one out here, but a friend in Sydney told me it was heavenly in a heavily embellished and quilted evening jacket she made for her daughter.

Yes indeed - the Silk Route is a fantastic shop. They are unbelievably helpful - and the range of different types of silks they carry is amazing. I hadn't even heard of most of them, when I read their listing! Another very satisfied customer (not frequent, but happy whenever ...) . In message , NightMist writes

OOOO -- is there a link for this shop? Did I miss seeing it? I LOVE working with silk. I have a white silk quilt planned for my niece & her DH as an anniversary gift and I have been collecting different fabrics for the last year. I need a few more so I'm always on the lookout. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

They are solely a mail order place, so they are very experienced in all the ins and outs of sampling etc. . In message , Tia Mary writes

"...a show I'm going to in the Autumn..." eh?

Chilford by any chance?

If so, what day are you intending going - and if we can, d'ya fancy a meet up?

Good guess!

A meet up would be fun - haven't got as far as which day to go yet though - not until November. Which day will you be going.

I went to the Embroiderers' Guild Regional Day today and found that the Silk Route should have been there, but they had had some problems (I presume with their van), and didn't make it. Probably a good thing, because I don't want to be tempted before I've decided what I'm making with the silk batting. I need to think a bit!

I didn't buy much - just a book on bags and one or two threads to use in said bags when I get round to them! I seemed to have most of the 'must haves' everyone else was buying already! I did buy a compass thing that cut circles instead of drawing them (on paper). Will be useful for applique and Suffolk Puffs (YoYos).
