small/tight applique help

Hi Anne, your work is lovely. Thank you for sharing. I can see how those narrow bits can be a footer. I think lots of starch, fray check or the frayblock Polly was mentioning (thank you for that Polly I'll try get a hold of some to try) and the cocktail stick. And lots of patience. And subtle fingers or is that supple? You know what I mean. I liked Jeanne's idea of appliqu=E9ing the tear drop shape on top. that would be a little easier.

The are long strips of fabric an inch wide, turned into half inch wide bias tape, then a zig zag stitched along it to gather it up, I made them into flowers away from the background fabric, though some instructions apply them straight to the background. Then the end of each petal and the join between two of them is caught by a tiny stitch to apply to the background.

Cheers Anne

smaller than 1/8"? how small do you need? if its that small, might be worth embroidering what you need. could do a couple rows side by side of flat stem stitch to get the width you need. lost in the south pacific, jeanne

Anne, I am still learning applique tricks myself. I think the most amazing thing is that a trick that works for one person doesn't work for everybody. I just try each one until I find something that works for me. One of the best places I've found for learning tips is the applique addicts yahoo group. Here's the addy:

well I don't "need" them at all, though I don't like to be defeated! I know embroidery was used on baltimore album quilts, but I'm not planning to do it, as it's a very small component of a bigger design, I could omit the smaller component, or maybe use a different flower.

Cheers Anne
